Zodiac for Mac

Saturday, December 28, 2002, 14:20 | Jonas Wæver |  Comments

Steve Tack has somehow picked up that we are all out of news (maybe it was the devastating emptyness of our news page), so he sent us a small, but important, news item from Zodiac. The first part of his mod is now available for Mac users! So if you're one of those, head over there and see what he has to offer.

Another Warren Spector Interview

Saturday, December 28, 2002, 07:48 | Jonas Wæver |  Comments

Yet another Warren Spector interview has emerged. This one has been conducted by Computerandvideogames.com, and is quite good. With the amount of interviews the man is subject to, you'd think he never spent any time on making the actual games that he's interviewed about. As is tradition, here is an interesting except that you might as well have read in the interview itself:

If you could wave your magic wand and create your ideal computer game just like that, what would it be?

Spector: Well, John Romero offered me the opportunity to make the game of my dreams when I joined Ion Storm and the result was Deus Ex. So there's a clue right there, I suppose. I hope the future holds more games like that, but with deeper simulations and without the need to resort to action, Action, ACTION all the time. (I'd love to make a game that didn't include a single weapon! I'm so bored with virtual violence...) But, you know, really, I don't think about some "ideal computer game" - I just think about what tiny step forward we can take with the next game, and the one after that and the one after that. Progress comes step by step...

DXDune Announcement

Monday, December 9, 2002, 07:52 | Jonas Wæver |  Comments

We have recieved this announcement from the DXDune mod:

Some of you might have memories of the DXDune mod which has never really got anywhere. Several attempts have been made to try and increase interest in it, but nothing has worked. However, we are now trying a completely new approach. The Dune Mod is not just DXDune. It has evolved into something far bigger and better. The Dune Mod is now DXDune, NWDune and UTDune.

By expanding the mod in this way we hope to tap into the resevoirs of talent from the huge Neverwinter Nights and Unreal Tournament 2003 communities, and hopefully this should give the mod the kick it needs to get somewhere. More information can be found at the mod's new website.

Ghost in the Machine

Sunday, December 8, 2002, 05:34 | Jonas Wæver |  Comments

The team working on a new Deus Ex 1 mod which has been under production for approximately two months now, called Ghost in the Machine, has decided to announce the existence of their mod, now that they have something to show for their efforts, as they put it. What follows is a little excerpt from their webpage:

The world of Ghost in the Machine is a brutal and dark dystopia. From the perspective of our protagonist, Thelonious, there is no illusion of humanity. We enter the game in a truly grim time. The 2162 elections for senator of Los Angeles Free State are almost over, and anyone will do just about anything to make their party win the vote. Thelonious is thrown into a world where lies and deceit are all around him, and he knows not whom to trust. The only thing that moves him now is credits.

Ghost in the Machine will be in intricate story of love, lies and deceit. It also adds a number of features:

  • Augmentations will be altered to become cyberware, and there will be a wider selection.

  • Several new skills will be added, making characters more customizable than ever.

  • A new hacking system will be created.

  • Many sub quests will be implemented, leaving you with endless options on what to do next.

  • Player will have their own apartment, and a bank will be used.

  • NPC shops will be set up so players will have to buy weapons, and cyberware, and not find them.

The team invites you to visit their website and read more about their mod.

Vortex Goes DX2

Wednesday, December 4, 2002, 10:13 | Jonas Wæver |  Comments

It has been decided to postpone the production of Project Vortex until the release of DX2:

Vortex' Productions Leader, Ben Gray, had the following to say:

"Project: Vortex was going to have too many features that would not have been able to use the current DX1 engine without de-stabilising it and possibly damaging other people's computers. This will also allow us to concentrate more on the plot of the game and thus make it a much more enjoyable experience."

Spector speaks on the Future of Gaming

Tuesday, December 3, 2002, 17:54 | Despot |  Comments

The intrepid Silverdawn sends word of an interesting article containing a lengthly interview with The Spector, with his views on where gaming is going. Here's a random quote:

GameSpy: Will new types of games be possible with improved AI? What should we expect?

Warren Spector: I hope we see new types of games. Frankly, I'm kind of tired of people -- players and developers -- assuming "AI" is synonymous with "combat behavior" or with "tamagotchi-like character development." I'd love to see games that modeled a broader range of human behavior. The Sims gets at some of that, but there's still really no feeling of interacting with another human being, even in that game. We have a LOT of work to do in this area. Frankly, I've talked a lot with my friend and colleague, Doug Church, about how we ought step up to the plate and take on the NPC interaction problem as our next big design goal. But even he, tech / design guru that he is, finds the job so daunting it isn't worth the effort yet -- ten years from now, maybe, he says. Someday, though...

Akimbo Weapons Mod

Tuesday, December 3, 2002, 17:44 | Despot |  Comments

TRM from D-X.org has notified us of this interesting mod, allowing the use of akimbo weapons in DX--should work in both SP and MP. Now, for a little John Woo flavah to the DX Experience...;)

Face Interview

Sunday, December 1, 2002, 04:48 | Jonas Wæver |  Comments

DX-Online has recently had the pleasure of interviewing Face, the creator of the Disclosure mod. Here is a little exerpt from the interview:

Illuminati-IIS: Will you be releasing maps and mods for DX2?

Face: It's quite possible that you'll be seeing a "Disclosure 2" for DX2. There is still a lot of scope at the end of Disclosure for a continuation to be made. By looking at the screenshots for DX2 I can quite honestly say that I am really looking forward to getting my hands on the new editor.

The interview maybe be found here.

WDW Clan

Sunday, December 1, 2002, 04:29 | Jonas Wæver |  Comments

A new DXMP clan called [WDW]Who Dares, Wins is looking for new recruits and someone willing to design a nice logo for them. There will, of course, be no payment for designing them a logo, but they would really appreciate it. Apparently, they know nothing about creating a clan, so ideas, advice and logo ideas can be submitted to zoomzoomkid@sympatico.ca.

The November update is up at the website of the Disclosure mod. It includes some great looking screenshots and some fact files about the different locations in the mod. There is also a link. Spector in Newsweek

Wednesday, November 27, 2002, 18:47 | Despot |  Comments

This snippet from Newsweek was reported to us by that good old boy and underground Star Wars geek named Gwog:

November 25, 2002

Newsweek

Why do videogames have to be so violent?

...already seeing signs of movement. The most successful games - Myst, The Sims and others - don't feature a lick of virtual violence. - Warren Spector, Game Developer, Eidos Interactive

An interesting trend, that...and a good one, giving the Games a wider range of appeal.

Cassandra Updated

Thursday, November 21, 2002, 08:01 | Jonas Wæver |  Comments

To ensure that you people are aware of the continued development of the Cassandra Project, the Narcissus Entity has been so gracious as to post an update on the website of the project. Apparently, the Cassandra Project is nearly ready for a release, and the details almost made me wet myself. I'm still not sure whether this is the final release or just a sort of demo, but it'll be cool, that's for sure.

New DX Website

Saturday, November 16, 2002, 03:15 | Jonas Wæver |  Comments

Codeman3 has recently added a Deus Ex section to his site (or he's recently made a new site with DX on it, hard to tell which), but it's still a little empty. Anybody is welcome to submit files to his site, which also features a Duke Nukem 3D section and a StarCraft section. I guess this guy likes old games :)

Chronological News

Tuesday, November 12, 2002, 07:42 | Jonas Wæver |  Comments

The website of the Chronos mod has been updated with some new eye candy. Although, at times, the website lies dormant, the mod is - according to aUnt beTty (who has apparently never heard of such a thing as signatures) - getting somewhere fast. They're working hard to beat the release of DX2.

However, more coding help is needed. They're not asking for "coders", just coding help, and as coding help, you will receive as much credit as you want, be it a mention in the readme or a bio on the website. If you think you can help, please email beTty at scubasteve501@aol.com.

And on a sidenote, it has come to our attention that Despots 'friends up high' suck.

Disclosure Mod needs new musician

Wednesday, November 6, 2002, 12:43 | slicer |  Comments

News has arrived from Face, head of the Disclosure mod, that he is in need of a new musician:

Following the departure of John "Isamu" Dickson from the Disclosure project (who now no longer has time to support the project), I am in need of a quality musician who is able to capture the unique atmosphere and ambience of the Deus Ex and Disclosure worlds. If you are an experienced mod tracker who would like to help out with Disclosure please get in touch with some links to examples of your work (please do not email sound files directly to me as attachments are automatically removed). Email: face@rush365.co.uk or www.facedesigns.co.uk for details. Thanks Face

Community boost needed from DXEditing

Wednesday, October 30, 2002, 08:34 | slicer |  Comments

With the number of activities in the Deus Ex community slowing down to a slow pace, the staff over at DXEditing.com has suggested an idea that should hopefully kickstart the community again. What they want is some suggestions to what should be done, whether it'll be mods, a new graphics engine, Deus Ex 1 Part 2 released by Ion Storm or anything that isn't out of the ordinary. You can contact them by e-mailing suggestions@dxediting.com. More information can be found at the DXEditing.com site.

The Chronos Mod

Tuesday, October 22, 2002, 07:40 | Jonas Wæver |  Comments

Aunt Betty has sent us this about his new modification here on PlanetDeusEx:

Slow it down. Way down.

Implementing a "bullet-time/matrix" augmentation that was once coded by the great James Keeble, the Chronos Mod Team has now taken that aspect and integrated it into a thicker mod.

The Chronos Mod is a modification of the current Deus Ex story. In other words, it will change your actual Deus Ex game. Some characters will be replaced by newer versions and new weapons will be implemented, along with a new starting map for "JC" to begin with, where he will obtain his newfound augmentation that allows him to slow time down, jump higher, and run faster. Along with new music, new players, new characters, new weapons, new maps, new augmentations, new models... Deus Ex will be new to you all over again.

Visit Chronos.

Hopefully, a link to the mod will soon appear in the Hosted Sites list.

Year 2102. The age of nano-augmented humans is here. In this dark world of brutality there is no place for stealth tactics, moral decisions and mercy. You must fight and kill if you want to be the last one alive... This is the first complete mod in the history of DX.

  • Fast, dynamic music

  • Challenging gameplay

  • Advanced AI

  • 5 new maps

The Mod Formerly Known As Paladin X

Tuesday, October 15, 2002, 09:39 | Jonas Wæver |  Comments

The Mod Formerly Known As Paladin X has requested that we post this (they're just getting more and more demanding!):

As our mod draws near completion, we at Paladin X are radically changing our approach. Rather than release the story-based mod we have created, Paladin X is now being released as a Virtual Reality (VR) training program set before the events of Deus Ex. Not to be confused with the "Deus Ex: Prequel" mod, Paladin X is now set during the "drills" JC Denton underwent before the events with majestic 12. We have refined our skills since the release of our demo, and although our mod now has no story as such, references to the characters we all know and love will be made, along with hints at the massive adventure to follow our mod (Deus Ex and its subsequent mods). Our mod will feature several scenarios not shown in Deus Ex, such as formal hostage rescue and sniper wars with a rival sniper. All usable maps from our mod will be incorporated, although many more specific maps will be created. There will be between 6 and 10 levels, each containing one of 3 major objectives:

  • Sneaking

  • Combat

  • Hostage rescue

These will each contain several sub objectives.

Hence, from now on, our Mod will be known as "Deus Ex: VR Missions".

DXMP Basketball

Friday, October 11, 2002, 18:16 | Despot |  Comments

slicer has sent in a novel new map for you DXMPers: DXMP Basketball, a bloodless game of basketball via DXMP--satifying that secret desire you always had to be the next Micheal Jordan or Magic Johnson, but could never fulfill because you couldn't get more than five steps away from the computer without passing out from the physical exertion. The map is 116 KB, and here is the download link: DXMP_Basketball.

Twist - Chapter 13: "Men of Power"

Sunday, October 6, 2002, 16:20 | Ghandaiah |  Comments

I actually wrote something. Surely there is a reward of some sort to be had here; A trophy of excellence. No? Oh, well. You folks get more content, anyway, and that's all that matters... I think.

I know it's been a disgustingly long amount of time since I've last written anything for this site, and I will not offer excuses, though I have many. Here's the latest, anyway, so have at it... I'll try to be a little less absent from now on... I know you guys check this site every day in great anticipation to see if I, Master of Words, have produced some new article fit for the gods... Or perhaps that's just part of my pathetic fantasy... Hard to tell the difference these days.

DXMP Swamps Courtyard

Sunday, October 6, 2002, 13:31 | Jonas Wæver |  Comments

Grub Ninja has mailed us about his new DXMP map, which can be found here. The info page contains a lot of screenshots, and a short description. The map was designed with gameplay in mind, so it's not the most visually pleasing map in history, but I wouldn't say it's ugly either. Give it a chance.

Target Sighted Updated

Friday, October 4, 2002, 11:09 | Jonas Wæver |  Comments

Target Sighted has been updated. Apparently the poor Aesthesia has lost the ability to type coherent sentences, but I guess an update is an update. What I make of it is this: The weapons are being redone and some character portraits and concept sketches have been created somehow. Head on over there and check it out. Drop me a note if I went wrong somewhere in the translation of his news post ; )

We have recieved word of a new single player modification for DX, Project: Vortex, in which you play a spy working for MI6. There will be new weapons, characters, skills, augmentations, gameplay, textures and classes, as well as a new character to control. In other words: a total conversion of Deus Ex. The player will be given many moral decisions to make, and these will all affect gameplay. A website for the mod may be found here.

A Small Reminder from DXDune

Thursday, September 26, 2002, 07:22 | Jonas Wæver |  Comments

Peter 'SpectralShadows' Boughton of the Dune mod asked us to post the following:

I've said it many times, and it is true, so I will say it again. DXDUNE WILL NOT DIE. However, for progress to be made we need two things: Willing team members and faithful fans.

If you have any experience with modding the Unreal/DeusEx engine, or other skills which would be useful, then please join up. If you are simply interested in the mod, please visit the forum and post - the more interest there is in the mod, the more motivated we will be to work faster and harder, and the sooner it will get released. The site has had over 4000 unique visitors - if only 10% of them posted a single message on the forum then it would nearly double the current amount of messages. We need your support!

So, do what the man says. Join the mod, or at least just drop by their forum.

Unfortunately they only have plans of releasing it for consoles so far, but they better decide to release it for PC too! Get the full story and some screenshots from GameSpy, or maybe from IGN.com.

There isn't much new information, but two nice pics are provided, and one of them contains four more or less new screenshots which show off some shadows and so on. I also couldn't help but notice the guy scratching his neck on one of the pics. That looks like some nice animations.

OHND Story Released

Thursday, September 5, 2002, 07:02 | Jonas Wæver |  Comments

The background story of OHND, Harbinger's Folly, has been posted for reading on-line or downloading as a zipped file in Word or just plain .txt format.

20 years after near global domination by Helios's puppets and "The Silencing" to which they subjected the world, Megacorps have taken the lead in restoring civilization. TriOptimum's crown jewel Citadel Station has been destroyed, as well as its top secret SHODAN class AI, by shadow employee 2-4601 - who has taken to the dark underground of Chi Town to avoid capture and certain death at the hands of TriOptimum.

The Hacker, no longer 2-4601, but no longer anything he had once been - for better or worse - looked at Vash's medical report and saw his fate. SHODAN had tried to make him a god, but condemned him to a slow death. His memories were as black as his rotting body and as vacant as his soul. Robins had given him a chance to strike a blow against TriOptimum and TetraCorp, but with each mission realized Robins' information was too precise for a low-ranking executive. Walton Simons, transformed by his near-death experience at the hands of JC Denton and his own aching conscience for his role in ending "The Silencing", founder of ISIS-5, may be the only person capable of keeping the hacker out of the hands of a new and mysterious threat - a superhuman assassin with capabilities rivaling even SHODAN's "Elite" on Citadel. Have Simons and the Hacker struck a deal with the lesser of two evils; will they learn the err of their ways only too late?

The OHND mod begins where Harbinger's Folly ends and will answer the question of what lies ahead.

gamerCastle have posted a small preview of Deus Ex 2. The preview may be found here. There isn't really any new info, but at least we can read it and confirm that we're not the only Deus Ex fanatics out there, who tremble at the thought of a sequel.

On the Progress of Zodiac

Wednesday, September 4, 2002, 13:04 | Jonas Wæver |  Comments

AHA! NEWS! Sure, I had to go look for it, but it's there... at the very bottom of the mod list... Zodiac. They report that the work is going well. Mission 2 is almost ready for beta testing and Missions 3 and 4 are coming along nicely. The last part, part 3, containing the final two missions should be available in the start of 2003. Read it in other terms here.

TNM Updated a Little Late

Ah, here we are. The website for The Nameless Mod has been updated, featuring a new POTW showing off the new weapon: Akimbo Pistols inspired - with permission - by the only weapon ever completed for the Ordinance mod. Two new teammembers have also been announced. Joy!

Not Quite Unrelated

Wednesday, September 4, 2002, 05:37 | Jonas Wæver |  Comments

Thanks goes to Phoenix for supplying me with this almost completely unrelated news item. Apparently, the Greek government has banned ALL electronic gaming - get this - BY ACCIDENT! This also goes for games on mobile phones. You may read the details here and here.

*Ahem*

Wednesday, September 4, 2002, 05:30 | Jonas Wæver |  Comments

In response to the latest news post on DXEditing, I would like to point out that I have not been abducted by aliens, nor have any of the other staffers... recently. We are merely extremely lazy... I mean, out of news! Yes, that's what I mean. We have no news, whatsoever. To compensate for this, I shall now go dig up something completely unrelated to Deus Ex, and only slightly related to gaming in general. Then, I'm going to update TNM, even though we usually update on mondays, and post about it here. Be right back...

This Demo is the first level in the mod, although it is not the version that will appear in the final edition. TNM Needs Coder

Sunday, August 25, 2002, 02:33 | Jonas Wæver |  Comments

Trestkon has mailed us that The Nameless Mod is now in need of a coder, with Winquman moving to a cold place and not taking his computer (I guess he needed a cold turkey). TNM needs a dedicated and hardworking coder (do those exist? Sorry). Payment will be in the form of radishes. Apply here. Quickly. I know you want to...

New DX2 Screenshots

Saturday, August 24, 2002, 07:21 | Despot |  Comments

Thanks to carone for pointing out that ION Storm has word of four new DX2 screenies on the official site. The setting appears to be some kind of gritty underworld bar, and the level of detail is freaking phenomenal. If this is any indication of how detailed the environments will be, then community designers are going to be hard-pressed to maintain the same standard...

Penumbra to be Resurrected

Thursday, August 22, 2002, 07:56 | Jonas Wæver |  Comments

Solidus Snake has sent us this mail regarding the reanimation of his mod Penumbra:

Penumbra Mod is reopening its doors but to a new outlook of a different subject. The Penumbra mod is being transformed into an fan based anime game centered around the all time favorite anime called Trigun. For fans of this the storyline will be the classic sad Pioneer ending that could only be expected from Pioneer or the long awaited "Eden Project" ending. The basic plot is that Knives has now been planning behind Vash's back and is still trying to desicreat mankind to save all the "plants" (You'd have to watch Trigun to understand that one) from being killed off. If you have any Mapping ablity, skinning, con-edit or ADVANCED coding skills please contact me at mega_x2001@hotmail.com (I have MSN instant messanger) - Vash (aka Solidus Snake)

New DX Fansite

Sunday, August 18, 2002, 09:19 | Jonas Wæver |  Comments

An anonymous sender has sent us the address for a new Deus Ex fansite and a brief description of the same:

This is a site I have just started work on. I was sick of trying to find some interesting Deus Ex content on the net. Fansites just follow the same pattern of walkthrough, FAQ, screenshots etc... but hopefully this will be something different. Very early days, but there are some interesting things up already. I would appreciate some feedback as to what people would like to see on it.

The site looks pretty cool already. Kinda roleplayish. If you feel like sending some feedback, click here.

New FM submitted Gillard Robert (BOB) entitled Fatal Weapon. Here is a bit o' descriptive text:

I'm working on a story wich will be include three maps (including this one). I think it will be finished into one or two months. first I realised this map in French and second, I had to translate it in English. (I'm not Anglo-saxon but Belgian). So excuse me for some expressions that couldn't match. The complete work will be correctly translated by my Goddaughter who's just finished a language stage in England.

There is no readme and no installer, so you're on your own if you wanna try this out.

TNM Weekly Update

Tuesday, August 13, 2002, 11:46 | Jonas Wæver |  Comments

Yes, it is a bit late, but my connection took a hike yesterday before I managed to post it, so sorry about that. In any event, The Nameless Mod has been updated as usual, this time with a new wallpaper, made by Liquid Snake, as Picture of the Week. Abom|nation has also returned from holiday and is ready to resume his graphics making. The picture you currently see as our own PotD was made by me in a spree of creativity, and so, it is not officially a TNM thing; it is to be considered fan art, even if I am part of the team.

Paladin X News

Sunday, August 11, 2002, 07:16 | Jonas Wæver |  Comments

Slight correction from the Paladin X team:

We recently announced that the Paladin X demo would be released, then didn't really follow it up. Well, we had to make several additions to, and subtractions from, the level, which pushed back the release date. The level structure is now complete. We still have to finish the conversations, but that will be complete by roughly Wednesday/Thursday. Hence the Paladin X demo will definately be complete by this Friday. Thx for your time.

New DX2 Video

Monday, August 5, 2002, 05:36 | Jonas Wæver |  Comments

Lubomir Hauerland has found a new in-game video from Deus Ex 2 on the Czech gaming site Bonusweb. Now, I think you should sit down. Ok, ready? It is in their paid section. *Hands out napkins* There, there... go on, let it out... that's it. In order to prevent the number of internet suicides to rise dramatically from this piece of news, Lubomir has put up some pics from the video on his DX fansite. They're pretty low quality, but at least it's something. I think it might be time for us to start a support group for people that read news like this.

Secondly, there's a review of the same map by CoMpUdOc, slicer, Trystero, and DerianX. The final score is a bit low, however: 38.5%

DerianX has joined the team as level designer, and there are some new screenshots of NYC by Kamdew.

A Desperate Plea for Help

Monday, July 29, 2002, 03:34 | Jonas Wæver |  Comments

We have received the following desperate cry for help from Dark[NSF]:

The [NSF] Mod has its advanced weapon code complete, but, I can't replicate (client to server and server to client) it!!! If you would like to help me (Dark[NSF]) out, plllleeeeeaaaassseeee!!! please, email me. I am so close but yet... so far away. The only other way to solve this problem is to have some modelers make models (and I currently dont have any modelers! They join then quit, it makes me angry =) ) so I don't need to use dx weapon models and the automatic script (cuts down model's shoot anim, but veeeeery buggy).

If you want to show some mercy and help this poor, suffering man, mail him here or here. Also, this is his site.

Steve Tack interviewed @ DXM.com

Saturday, July 27, 2002, 21:01 | Despot |  Comments

DeusEx-Machina.com has posted a new interview with the creator of Zodiac (and the man behind Tack's Deus Ex Lab), Steve Tack. Discussion of the project and its history to be had, as well as some information about the team behind it. A quote:

DXM: Why the name Zodiac for your project?

Steve: Hehe, well you'll have to play the final version to find out. :) It has kind of a double meaning, but the initial idea came directly off of a conspiracy website.

DXM: Oh? Got any more details to share about that, or would you rather not?

Steve: Here's a hint: the MJ12 that is talked about on many of those conspiracy sites is closer to "X-Files" kind of stuff than the MJ12 in Deus Ex. ZODIAC has more to do with *that* MJ12.

DX2 Interview

Thursday, July 25, 2002, 13:21 | Despot |  Comments

Today we have an interview with various members of the DX2 team on BGN.be, pointed out by Raptor. A few tidbits of new information about the game, and here's the obligatory quote:

You claim that the game will be playable without killing a single person, what's the fun in that?

Matt: As our characters and world become more believable, more players are going to be thinking twice before putting a bullet in someone's head. The possibility of a non-lethal path presents a challenge to those who wish to adopt that play style. But more than the challenge, lethal force is something that should be left up to the player. Just because we may go in with guns blazing doesn't mean that we should force all players to do the same thing. Deus Ex has always been about choices, and this seems like an important one.

Special Forces Lifesigns

Thursday, July 25, 2002, 03:45 | Jonas Wæver |  Comments

We have recieved a news update from Dark_Spirit of the Special Forces mod:

Jarus (a.k.a. hejhujka) has been working hard to get all the code for the mod done, and all coding for the mod is now finished. New gametypes, etc.

Mapping is going great as well. For now, they have only 2 maps completely done, but it looks like that number will be increasing to 4 soon. Nonkillingmachine has been working hard on his maps, and soon they'll have some screenshots of his finished map: SF_Abandonedcity.

The moddeling and texturing hasn't gone as well. Due to a lack of time, gunndar hasn't completed all of his texturing yet, but he will soon. Dark_Spirit will complete animating the weapons he made within long. Currently, only 1 weapon is completely done - due to a virus on Dark_Spirit's computer, the 7 completely done weapons were lost - the AK47, and screenshots will follow soon.

Estimated status:

Coding: 100%

Moddeling: 55%

Texturing: 50%

Mapping: 50%

And things get even stranger still. If you've been following this chapter-by-chapter novel, major events occur in this chapter, and a large chunk of the plot starts to reveal itself. Though I must admit none of what's happened so far even touches the real deal.

Paladin X Looking Good

Thursday, July 18, 2002, 05:32 | Jonas Wæver |  Comments

Paladin X sends word that the first map of 6 is nearly complete and will be released as their demo within the next few days(!) The only thing left to do is the conversations. The next map is about 55% complete, with the next being about 35% done. In other words, the mod is looking good!

Their site is also functional, although a few more links will be added over time. Character bios, in particular. Their new wallpaper has been put up as POTD, and looks kinda creepy, me thinks. In a cool way ;P

PDX = 4

Tuesday, July 16, 2002, 21:50 | Despot |  Comments

Well, well, a To-Do item and many good intentions aside, it still took a poke from Mr. Gwog to make us aware of the fact that as of the 14th of this month, PlanetDeusEx has in fact been in existence for 4 (four) years. That's almost too many to count on one hand!

Gwog would also like it to be known that it is one year since he was "fired"...but he's not bitter...except about not getting any presents. This also marks one year of Site Coordinating by Despot, which coincidentally coincides with the descent of the site into madness and disarray. Or maybe that's Ghandaiah's fault.

But who cares?! Party in the Comments thread!

Thievery Mutator porting to DX

Thursday, July 11, 2002, 20:11 | Despot |  Comments

Thanks to D-X.org, DXEditing.com, and Mazur for the word regarding a port of the Thievery Mutator by Arcanex--description:

This is a port of the original Thievery Mutator from UT to Deus Ex. Like the original, what this does is change your translucency depending on the amount of light falling on you, allowing you to effectively be invisible in the dark. With a new AI visibility system in Deus Ex, now you can also effectively hide from the bot AI. You even get a lightgem to check your visibility, just like the Thief games.

More info regarding Thievery can be found here.

Other tidbits of info are to be had as well, such as expected release time (sometime in 2005). Thanks to Mark Peloquin and Anubus134@aol.com notifying us of this.

Hotel Carone Released

Sunday, June 30, 2002, 21:27 | Despot |  Comments

After what is know as "a long time" in development, carone from #dxediting has finally released his much-anticipated Fan Mission: Hotel Carone. This FM was submitted, unfinished, to the Fan-Made Mission contest (gives you an idea of how long it's been around), and the following was said of it by ION Storm:

"Hotel Carone" starts out with an incredibly cool intro flic, some wonderful geometry (weirdly like some of the DX2 concept art!). There's an awesome moment where you find a miniature model of a location you get to explore, life-size, later in the mission (which had us loudly lamenting the fact that we hadn't thought of doing that ourselves!). The mission concept allowed players to stay with UNATCO (probably the most requested unrealized story element in the original game). There was some great lighting, great architecture, innovative use of the technology, multiple paths... Everything except a climax.

So call Hotel Carone the unfinished symphony and wonder what might have been...

Well, now you can see it. Get downloading.

The Path To Illumination: The Eleventh Hour

Thursday, June 27, 2002, 15:40 | King Kashue |  Comments

Well, I'm back and I'm cheesed off...I was planning on being the first to use the picture of Despot as part of a joke...But nnooooooo...Ghand had to tack the picture of Despot on to the end of his last news post...No lead up, no structure, just the picture of Despot...How cheap can you get?!?...I mean I had big plans for the unveiling of the picture of Despot, even though I wasn't the one to acquire it...I wouldn't be upset if Ghand had used the picture of Despot in a suitable manner, but he just threw the picture of Despot up there as an afterthought...So much potential lost...So much could have been done with the picture of Despot...

Ah well...Oh yeah, there's a new installment of Path to Illumination...go uh...go take a look...

Harvey Smith interviewed by Gaming Horizons

Wednesday, June 26, 2002, 17:59 | Despot |  Comments

Seen on GamespyDaily: an interview with Harvey Smith on Gaming Horizon. A few new screenies and some new info. A quote:

GH: How will the non-linear story work? Will your choices, good or bad, affect the ending? Will there be more than one ending, or bonus items as a reward for making the "good" decisions?

HS: Our writers, Sheldon Pacotti and Sarah Paetsch have written thousands of lines of "barks." These are sets of one-liners that reflect the AI state of a character. So, as the player moves through the world, changing things, characters can make intelligent comments that reflect these changes. Characters have different personalities and agendas, so one might reward you for doing something good, while another might reward you for doing something darker. Our branching conversations reflect the way you've played too--most characters have several ways of looking at your actions. We've also cooked up four endgames.

The World Trade Center Mod

Tuesday, June 25, 2002, 09:42 | Despot |  Comments

Received word of a new DX mod that looks rather unique: it is, apparently, a mod based on a hypothetical chain of events following the World Trade Center collapse. Here's the story blurb:

After the World Trade Centre Disaster and during the war on terror in Afghanistan President George W Bush uses the cover of war on terrorism to slowly take away peoples civil rights and liberties (e.g. – prison without a Trial). Backed and encouraged by American constitutions (Most notably F.E.M.A and its head) the president begins a second war on terror this time against Iraq, after the declaration of war Iraq launches its nuclear arsenal, The 3 missiles fired reach there target destinations (New York, Washington D.C and California) The country is in a state of panic and uproar, during the confusion the head of F.E.M.A (name here) takes the chance and implements the special powers granted to him for use during emergency, By removing the president and shutting down congress he takes control of America, as the story unfolds you find out that the war on terror has been a cover for something bigger, now its you’re job to find out what it is.

TNM Interactive Story

Thanks to Dark Templar, the interactive story of The Nameless Mod finally works. The idea is that the people who read it will write the different chapters as they go. The story is called The Ruins of Deus Ex Incarnate, and in case you don't know, Deus Ex Incarnate was the forefather of PlanetDeusEx. The story is set on and below the forums of PlanetDeusEx (and maybe beyond) like TNM. The main page of the story is here. Enjoy!

PC Gamer's exclusive preview of Deus Ex 2

Friday, June 14, 2002, 04:14 | slicer |  Comments

PC Gamer (Future Publishing Ltd) has produced a huge 6-page exclusive preview of Deus Ex 2 (thanks to GigaFuzz for the news) in their latest issue. A few new screenshots can be found on this latest issue of PCG, Issue #111 / July 2002 plus one of the long awaited shots of the male and female Alex Denton (the player in which you will play as) can be found too! The preview sounds more of a review of the game rather than a preview, with PCG praising the many effects that they have witnessed when they were shown around the game by Ion Storm, in particular, the lighting and shadowing effects have been the key highlights that makes the game very attractive. All this is thanks to the use of modern technology that powers the graphics effects with the likes of the heavily modified Unreal Warfare engine and the "state-of-the-art" Deus Ex 2 physics engine, which is powered by he use of Havok SDK.

Unlike Deus Ex, which was powered by the older Unreal engine, the mixture of lighting, shadow effects and sounds effects has allowed Ion Storm to produce a more sophisticated AI that powers the bots in the game. If you plan to hide from guards and become careless, you’ll regret to have even stepped into the danger zone. As Harvey Smith, Project Director, explains:

Everything in the world casts shadows. Our shadows are really amazing. The guards will hear a noise and come and investigate, but if you then go quiet and turn off the lights, the guard will be like ‘Oh, it must have been a rat’ and then go away.

and as Paul Tozour, AI Developer, explains about the AI having sound occlusion:

This (sound occlusion) indicates how much the current noise level in the area is blocking the NPC’s hearing. All the sounds the AI can hear – footsteps, humming machines, explosions, people talking – will cause this gauge to rise and make it more difficult for the NPC to hear things. So if you have an NPC standing in front of a noisy machine and the machine is switch on, you’ll see the NPC’s audio occlusion bar rise, and this will make it more difficult for him to hear your footsteps.

Of course, as PCG states, the main drive behind the game is not only the looks but the story and playability. Deus Ex 2 (and Deus Ex) is in a way, a very unique game. Unlike other games where you are guided from start to end, you are given options, which can change the game as you progress. As quoted (from PCG) from the mastermind of Deus Ex and Deus Ex 2, Warren Spector (Studio Director):

When you play a game it shouldn’t be about how clever the designer is, it shouldn’t be about ‘My God! What a cool puzzle! Wasn’t that neat, the way the designer created something and I solved it!’ It should be about you, in a game world, interacting with the game world and way you want it, making a plan and executing it. The player gets to be creative.

There are a few giveaways from the preview as to what the game will provide. Reading this quote:

JC Denton is missing and UNATCO have reared four genetically enhanced agents to look for him.

makes the game sounds very mysterious (especially if you have played Deus Ex) and increases the temptations to get the game furthermore.

Ok, ok, I get the message, I won’t write anymore otherwise I might as well copy the entire article over. I would have liked to post a few shots in here but the force of Ghandaiah and his Peanut World is too strong. Go and buy the magazine to reveal more interesting news than what I have written.

Modpages has done an interview with Trestkon, coordinator of The Nameless Mod. The interview is, if you haven't figured that yet, about the mod. It can be found here, and below you can find an example from it:

Insyder: What kind of weapons are being planned on for the first release?

Trestkon: Ah, got to love the weapons! Well, we already have several new weapons modeled, coded and working in game. They vary from serious to silly. We have a firestaff (shoots fire) a napalm gun, a gibinator as well as a laser, we are also working on a new weapon to replace the pistol, we have other weapons planned and will be working on them soon enough.

SS Deus Ex with new site design

Tuesday, June 11, 2002, 09:33 | Winquman |  Comments

SSDX, or the System Shock Deus Ex Project, will soon get a new site design. According to John Brough, the Project Coordinator, the new design will be graphically less noisy. He also points out that it might take a while for it to load on slower modems. At the moment you can find the new design here, but it will be moved to the PlanetDeusEx site, and more stuff will be added to it.

The team is also in need of NPC/weapon/item modelers who can also code them for use. You can apply on their homepage.

News From DX Dune

Sunday, June 9, 2002, 03:46 | Jonas Wæver |  Comments

Deus Ex Dune is starting up a competition soon, where you will be given a theme, and then you may model, map, design or draw whatever fits the theme. If, for example, the theme is "Design a Lasgun", then everybody has a shot at it and then the team selects the best one, the one that they'll probably use, and the designer gets a prize.

Also, their forums are very active and they're always searching for ideas. So if you have an idea, come by their "Got a great idea?" forum and post it there.

Deus Diablo asked me to post the following message about the current state of the Party Zone mod:

Recently, I've been recieving a lot of e-mails requesting information about Party Zone. Just to clarify, most of the team is currently working on another project (TNM) and so, production on the mod has stopped. This is only temporary, and we will be back soon with a brand new version of Party Zone. We still welcome all feedback and offers of help, especially from anyone running servers as we are very interested in opinions on how the mod is played.

Thanks,

Re-View of DX @ Evil Avatar

Thursday, June 6, 2002, 16:08 | Despot |  Comments

Evil Avatar has posted a fairly interesting "Re-View" of Deus Ex, which consists mainly of spoiler-laden nostalgia, which isn't a bad thing, really. A quote:

Re-View is not your standard review. It isn’t really an attempt to convince you that a given game is worth buying, not buying, or even buying just so that you can take a belt sander to the CD. No Re-View is really predicated on the notion that its readers (yes, both of you) have at least a substantive knowledge of the game being discussed, and often even that you’ve played it. It’s not so much about tossing subjective opinions around in the hopes of providing an insightful purchasing decision. It’s more about tossing subjective opinions around because doing so is fun. Ultimately, it’s just an excuse to talk about great games.

Thanks to the Author, Elysium, and Andreas M. for the notice(s).

The second article is actually the Best of E3 2002 Awards on RPGDot. Deus Ex 2 was awarded Best Sci-Fi RPG. The runner up was Neocron.

TNM Weekly Update

Sunday, May 26, 2002, 10:01 | Jonas Wæver |  Comments

Time for a new TNM update. Since the last one, two new members have been added to the team: Luminous Path will be helping me with the conversations, and DP will be mapping. In fact, DP's already made an entire map, though he's only been here for a week. A shot from the map, Raving's Weapon Shop, has been posted as the Picture of the Week.

Deus Ex: Invisible War at E3

Sunday, May 26, 2002, 06:17 | Winquman |  Comments

There are two small articles about Deus Ex: Invisible War on E3 - one here and an other one here. It's not exactly a lot of new info, but it's always fun to read about DX2. Thanks goes to Andreas M for noticing this.

Deus Ex Movie Confirmed

Friday, May 24, 2002, 03:34 | Jonas Wæver |  Comments

The rumors of a movie based on Deus Ex has been confirmed. You can read roughly the same announcement here, here or here. Most convincing is probably the press release on Eidos' site. These were brought to our attention by ShadowCode and The Smike.

More DX 2 Previews

Thursday, May 23, 2002, 05:38 | Jonas Wæver |  Comments

Andy M spotted another Deus Ex 2 preview on Ferrago. This one offers little new info, but there are a few good reflections and opinions. I also have to agree with Andy that I'll probably need a new computer when the time comes.

Chris notes that the Edge magazine in the UK has Deus Ex 2 on the front cover, and a sizeable preview of what's to come in the game, focussing on things already hinted at by other sources.

DX 2 Previews continued

Wednesday, May 22, 2002, 07:25 | Despot |  Comments

GameSpy has their DX 2 E3 coverage up today, with the following opener:

You are a lab rat. A highly sophisticated one, but a lab rat nonetheless. You are a part of a program where a certain faction is trying to recreate the technology that created Paul and JC Denton 20 years ago.

Your name is Alex and they were your brothers. And you are the faction's next step in its experimental bio-modification program.

Other new information: the skills system has been replaced with the augmentation system, which is know called the "bio-mod" system, the game is being designed to be shorter with more replayability, and this AI is named as a fellow lab rat, Billie Adams.

More DX 2 screenage and much Information

Tuesday, May 21, 2002, 10:29 | Despot |  Comments

Blue's News has hit the jackpot with a load of new DX 2 information: a press release from Eidos, mentioning the game will be coming to the Xbox, PC, and Playstation 2, a fact sheet, identifying the main character as "Alex D." (make a wild guess) and also mentioning an estimated release date of November 2003. Not only that, they have seven PC screenshots, and nine Xbox screens (non-leaked, non-watermarked).

The Nameless Mod Updates Again

Sunday, May 19, 2002, 01:56 | Jonas Wæver |  Comments

The propaganda officer webmaster of The Nameless Mod, Deus Diablo, has yet again updated the site. There's a new PotW up, of which you will be told nothing, but feel free to look. Don't touch though.

He has also added some flashy CSS script so the site now has coloured scroll bars and a logo in the bottom right corner. Lastly, a new section has been added under Maps in the Media section for the pictures that come from "secret" maps.

Comments or questions are always welcome at the forums. More updates will be coming your way, so keep checking things out!

Whilst you thought it wasn't possible, Special Reserve (UK) has started on "predicted" reviews of DX2 and also have started pre-orders for DX2!!! Whilst very little news have been released based on DX2 itself, it seems rather amazing how these guys have produced a small review to read. The price for pre-order is at Ł27.99 (I bought DX for Ł35 *cough*). Check it out at Special Reserve UK.

Deus Ex League

Saturday, May 18, 2002, 06:37 | Winquman |  Comments

We just got this mail from Chris Adams (a.k.a [TMF]Death):

Some of you may remember the Deus Ex League from a while back, which had a few goes at running leagues for clans, but couldn't go ahead due to a poor clan turnout when the leagues were started the three times we tried :-(

We have had a rethink, and are now running a Clan Tournament, in which we hope all DX clans will sign up, so that this can be a test to find the best DX clan. Clans can choose which servers they want to use, and will be given a certain week for each match in which they have to play. Clan leaders will have to contact the opponants for their tournament match, which will be decided by us, and arrange servers, maps, and the date and time for the match. In other words, we are running a tournament to find out which is the best DX clan, and it is up to the clans as to where, when and how the match is played. NO ADMINS OR SLOW SERVERS INVOLVED!

Any suggestions for how the tournament should be run, or any requests, can be sent to dxl-enquiry@tmfdeath.com

Currently the DXL website is offline, as we are making a redesign, and are moving hosting providers as well. All the old DXL signups will be kept intact, so only new clans will have to sign up.

Please spead the word about this tournament, we are hoping it will be the result of many hours of fun DX, instead of weeks of bickering on our forums.

Thanks

Invisible Online is Looking for Modellers

Friday, May 17, 2002, 06:00 | Jonas Wæver |  Comments

As stated above, Invisible Online needs modellers for the NSF mod. So far, the NSF mod has a Matrix-style slow motion mode where you can dodge bullets etc. They have grenade launchers, automatic rifles, a new recoil and aiming system, tons of fire and reload sounds, disarmable bombs, smoke grenades, flashbangs (in development) and a new punching ability! If you are interested in modeling for them, email Matthew Squire or Dark.

Unknown PotW at TNM

Sunday, May 12, 2002, 03:49 | Jonas Wæver |  Comments

This is kinda funny. Deus Diablo has once again updated the PotW of TNM, but he has no idea what it is. I do, however, and so does Trestkon, who made it. But we're not going to tell you. Trestkon would also as usual like to use this opportunity to point out that TNM needs a mapper and that you should feel free to drop by the forum and tell us what you think.

Alternative Fire

Friday, May 10, 2002, 15:55 | Jonas Wæver |  Comments

Ok, this is kinda big. Hejhujka has released a new DX mod called Alternative Fire. I shall quote the mail we got from PhotoBlokey:

This mod adds a classic alternative fire function to more then 20 Hejhujka-Tnag style weapons (energy and ballistic weapons: rail drivers, laser pistols and rifles, submachine guns, assault and sniper rifles, shotguns, miniguns and more...). There is a 2 weapon which adds a new type of damage for the NPCšs. There is also a few cool pickups such as a hologram device and remote controlled robots. In addition, this mod also contains a single-player mutator which modifies the original DX single player maps adding Hejhujka-Tnag style guns to the world, crates and NPCs.

The mod can be downloaded from Hejhujka's website.

A TNM Update

Wednesday, May 8, 2002, 06:06 | Winquman |  Comments

The Nameless Mod's homepage hasn't been updated in a while due to real life. Until now. Basically, what Trestkon says in the update is that they have planned a new update for this weekend. TNM is also, like almost every mod in the community, in need of mappers. If you think you can dedicate yourself to this project, mail Trestkon.

Dark_spirit is working hard and has finished some more models. They are well underway now. They've got some coders and they are working very hard to get the mod done. They're still looking desperately for texturers who can make some weapon skins. Please mail one of the team leaders below for a job. They're taking anybody. Mappers, coders, etc. It's no problem if you're a beginner, as long as you are dedicated to making a mod.

Grey Fusion Game Engine Editing Site

Sunday, April 28, 2002, 08:13 | Jonas Wæver |  Comments

We've recieved this mail from Chris "The Big C" Tonks:

Grey Fusion is a new site in the editing community, taking a slightly different stance in the subject. As opposed to the many sites dedicated to editing individual games, and some editing game genres, Grey Fusion is a site focussed solely on editing first-person shooter engines, the power behind the games. Presently there are four main sections for the four greatest FPS engines known today: Half-Life (now more than the mere derivative of Quake it once was), Quake and its reincarnations, Red Faction with its GeoMod technology and Unreal Warfare, the latest and greatest engine, soon to be seen in Unreal Tournament 2003. There's also a section for general FPS info, where the history and future of the genre will be laid bare.

We're currently severely understaffed, and need people to come along and help the site get on its feet. The following positions are available:

  • Half-Life Section Manager

  • Quake Section Manager

  • Red Faction Section Manager

  • Unreal Warfare Section Manager

  • Public Relations Manager

  • Forum Moderator

  • Writer/Reporter

  • General Staff

If anyone feels they have a talent for working in any of those fields, or if they have a background in editing games and/or their engines, they can come along to the Grey Fusion forum and sign up! We'll be glad to see you!

The main site: www.greyfusion.net

The site forum: www.greyfusion.net/forum

Note the "Unreal Warfare Section Manager" part. That's the reason why this post isn't completely off topic ;)

Mod News, Issue 7

Saturday, April 27, 2002, 09:37 | Winquman |  Comments

Mods are, as always, very, very important. And here are some news from the modding community:

  • Deus Ex: The Prequel is being put on hold until Deus Ex 2 is out.

  • DXDune is, just like several other mods, in a great need of team members. The community needs YOU!

  • The Nameless Mod has both got some new, and lost some team members. More info on the site.

  • The Vampire team has lost their primary modeler Wayne Earthman. Because of this, they could use a new modeler. They have also gotten a few new team members, Vitaly 'RatPoison' Naymushin will be creating skins and Dana 'Zynthetic' Nassick will be making music for the mod.

  • The Wrath of Halo is in need of a skinner. They also have the first pic of their SPAS 12 shotgun on the webpage.

  • UNATCO Born is now desperate for team members - they need all kinds of modders.

Paladin X needs Team

Tuesday, April 23, 2002, 15:37 | Despot |  Comments

This just in from the Lead of Paladin X:

The Guys at Paladin X are in desperate need of more team members. At the moment, there are only two people working on the physical mod itself. We at PX intend to keep our promise and not close Paladin X, but it is our goal to complete it before the arrival of Deus Ex 2. Otherwise, interest in our hard work by the public may wane, and for us, that is ten times worse than closure. So we ask for assitance asap. Please drop by our site, planetdeusex.com/paladinx or email AzarN at esj_obi@hotmail.com

At the moment, the most we would need is three members. We need

*Another mapper ( Knowldge of skyboxes is essential )

*Someone with intricate knowledge of triggers and movers.

*Someone who can work on conversations while we build the maps.

A free pint of chilled Dr. Pepper to the first one to sign up! Or something...

DX1 Continuity Bible

Wednesday, April 17, 2002, 15:46 | Despot |  Comments

GameSpy.com has posted an awesome 4-page feature, in which the Continuity Bible (essentially a detailed run-down of the game's plot) used to create Deus Ex is published, with questions by GameSpy's staff and answers from members of the Deus Ex team interspersed throughout. Some of the details vary from the actual game (Bob Page has control over an army of nano-creatures and fairly amazing power over the elements, for example), but overall it's a fascinating look at the fiction behind the game.

This isn't the end, either, check back in tomorrow and the next for the next two sections of the text.

New Hosted Site: SSDX: OHND Project

Monday, April 15, 2002, 00:00 | Despot |  Comments

Remember System Shock? One of the games that influenced Deus Ex, and a great game in its own right. So a mod incorporating elements of the two games together would obviously be as good as both!

Right. A mod of this nature has taken up residence on the PDX server (hax0ring suspected), and it is called SSDX: OHND Project. More details on the site, the story info being a bit long to paste here.

Modification Project Talkabout Issue 2

Thursday, April 11, 2002, 08:18 | Jonas Wæver |  Comments

The second issue of the Modification Project Talkabout is out on Deus Ex Machina. This issue's questions are How does your team's design plan cover installation? Have you thought this far ahead yet? Do you have secret plans? Do you wish someone would create a standard installer that could be customized to every mod? Do you plan to use a system that has already been released (DXLoader, TeamUC's Modloader)? and the featured mods are Crimson Death, The Cassandra Project, Warzone, DX Vampire, The Nameless Mod, Disclosure and Redsun 2020. Interesting reading.

PS2 Cheats for Deus Ex

Wednesday, April 10, 2002, 18:57 | Despot |  Comments

A little bird has given us some very useful information: cheat codes for the PS2 version of Deus Ex. These cheats give you access to the standard array of cheat codes: God mode, All Ammo, All Skills, etc. and one exception: a cheat called is called "Tantalus"--no description. Maybe one of the PS2ers can tell us what it does...

None of the fun codes like "IAmWarren" are there, unfortunately.

Unitedgaming's Modpool

Tuesday, April 9, 2002, 04:57 | Jonas Wæver |  Comments

Thought some people might be interested in this. Unitedgaming has created a "Modpool" for all the maps, models, code and other stuff that dead mods leave behind. Simply mail all the work you have no use for any more to sic@gmx.li or admin@unitedgaming.net and they'll store it and distribute it for you, so other mods can use your stuff. Your work will only be distributed once, and you'll have to be added to the credits of the mod that gets your work. You can also add various restrictions or additions. Sounds like a good idea eh?

More than a 100 DX'ers have visited the page since the first post - and she really thanks them for that - but she got extremely little feedback. So she asked us to post about her site again, this time mentioning that she would appreciate people signing her guestbook. I figured why not, so here you go.

This chapter is rather disturbing. Really. Honestly. It has... Well, just read it. It's twisted. But I guess it wouldn't be called "Twist" if it weren't! Ahahaha! Er...

TNM Looking for Mappers

Friday, April 5, 2002, 11:30 | Jonas Wæver |  Comments

Recenty, both Ghand and DT have ceased to map for TNM. This doesn't mean that the mod can't be completed, it just means a whole lot more work for Trestkon and Phasmatis, so TNM are looking for 1, maybe 2 more mappers to help lighten the work load. Samples would be great, please apply here.

Game Design Course?

Friday, April 5, 2002, 11:27 | Jonas Wæver |  Comments

We've recieved this mail from Scott 'dolo' Leonard:

A while back, you might remember, I taught about 200 people in an IRC level design course via Gamegirlz.com, where students would complete a number of assignments for grading and grow with the course to meet their personal goals.

Right now I am in the process of working up a proposal for my local college to get an IRC game design course approved for Fall 2002. This course would hammer out the fundamentals of designing a game, what works and what doesn't. Before I begin, I was hoping that the community might have some input as to what they would want in a course of this nature.

Basically, this would be an IRC class where students would walk away with something tangible regarding game design, and approaches therein. Obviously we would focus on the aspects of games today, and different types of games, but we would also have to look at a regiment of building smart games that impact the bottom line of a company positively.

So I guess I'm asking the community: what would you want from an IRC class with this potential that you or your employer would pay for?

Send all input to sleonard@planetquake and I will post any and all comments to Dteam, where applicable.

Huge Update from SF:WOT

Thursday, April 4, 2002, 04:39 | Jonas Wæver |  Comments

These are the updates on SF:WOT:

Geist (their coder and mapper) turns out to be a great concept artist, so he made two drawings which can be seen on their site.

Dark_spirit (the moddeler and leader) has finished the new hand that will be used and he's almost done with a desert eagle .45 handgun. He's also finished a new steyer aug reload and shot animation.

Lastly, they're still looking for some mappers, coders and texture artists. You don't need to be very skilled, they have some experienced team members that can teach you, so if you need experience, this is your chance to learn.

September 11th Memorial Page

Tuesday, April 2, 2002, 09:45 | Winquman |  Comments

Nope, this is not DX-related, but I still think it deserves a news post here. Phoenix just sent us a mail about a site he's running. Here is part of it:

Though I´m not personally concerned by the still unforgotten US terror attacks on September 11th, I started a kind of 'memorial page' last December, mutually with a friend. We put a lot of work into this 'project' and so in January we´d managed to build up a acceptable website with lots of pics and several links, articles, etc. But that success wasn´t lasting for long. Caused by copyright reasons, we were FORCED to erase more than two thirds of the entire content and so there are only a few html pages remaining after the deletation. After that setback the guy who was supporting me left the team and now I´m all alone with the whole thing.

The reason he mailed is that he is in need of help. He's planning on rebuilding the entire site, and he can't manage that by himself. If you feel you can help, you can write an e-mail to Phoenix2000@gmx.co.uk. You can also visit the site at http://www.11thOfSeptember.cjb.net.

Operation: Machina Counterfeit

Friday, March 29, 2002, 10:18 | Jonas Wæver |  Comments

Jim "Scifitechguy" Frazee asked us to post this for him:

Fellow Deus Ex Gamers,

My name is Jim "SciFiTechGuy" Frazee. I'm the leader of the mod team for Operation:Machina. As most of you know, awhile back I announced a new mod would be created, using all of the elements of the original DX game, a few new weapons, & a fresh storyline.

That was several months ago. In that time when I was not in school, I was working hard to find a storyline that would be good enough to make as the followup for DX.

However, as many mod teams know from experience, storylines & treatments for them are very hard to come up with. After looking at several basic plot lines I came up with, I realized that our team wouldn't hit a home run with any of them. In other words, the stuff I was churning out just plain sucked.

It was then I decided to branch out & get help with making a treatment. It was then I found a success. The team that made the mod Counterfeit had called it quits on the mod & released everything to public domain, saying that anyone could pick up on the idea & continue the project.

It is my pleasure to announce that Team Operation:Machina will be developing the mod for final release. I'm not sure at the moment what to rename it, if I'll rename it at all. And Operation:Machina is a temporary title also. So for the meantime, just call it "O.M.C." (stands for Operation Machina Counterfeit).

I have unfortunately lost contact with my team members, so I need people to work on maps. Also, I need people to help me with the storyline. If you want to submit a resume, contact me at scifitechguy@attbi.com.

Thank you for your time, & let's all keep our fingers crossed for "O.M.C."

PS2 reviewage

Wednesday, March 27, 2002, 20:16 | Despot |  Comments

Well, the reviews for the PS2 version are starting to roll in: the first one (very short) can be found on here on Gamepro.com. They liked the sound, controls, and fun factor, but complained of shoddy graphics. But then again, they place the game in the "Adventure" category, so perhaps their opinion does not deserve much considering...:)

PS2 Interview at Gamespot

Wednesday, March 27, 2002, 00:14 | Despot |  Comments

Shacknews has word of a interview on Gamespot.com with the team behind the PS2 version of Deus Ex: they talk about the game's dev, changes from the PC version, and the stuff-that-is-cool about the game. Here's a quote:

GS: We noticed that you've done quite a bit with some of the levels in the preview builds we've seen. Can you talk a bit about this?

Steve Powers: We refined the game and added a bit more color and flair to the situations and characters. Also, exploration will be fun for experienced DX fans since most of the maps were revisited and rearranged or streamlined.

MO: Almost every map has been retouched in the PS2 version. We did a lighting pass, a color balance pass, and redid a lot of textures, signs, etc. (made them high res). For example, the first map--Liberty Island--has been reworked to fit the situation. It looks and plays more like the NSF have actually assaulted the Statue. The secret area--NYC Underground--has been completely redone; people who saved Ford Schick in the PC version will have to face something new. Hong Kong has been improved and streamlined so that there is less going back and forth across the maps. Of course, we kept everything we liked--the last thing we wanted to do was rip out good gameplay.

A few Files: music & maps

Monday, March 25, 2002, 12:22 | Despot |  Comments

Okay, a few File submissions have showed up during my absence, and since we're too lazy to give 'em the p1mpage they deserve and post them separately here they all are:

DXThemeRemix.mp3: this is a combination of "the best parts" of the original PC Deus Ex theme, and the orchestrated PS2 version. By Tim "The Mac" Morgan.

A Bridge Too Far V2: An updated version of [SOL]BillWang's DXMP map: changes include fixing the turret names, fixing the messed up staircase, increasing the height of the roof ledge and various other minor modifications.

Presidental Emergancy V2: Mokili has continued work on his mission and has come up with an extended mission package, now consisting of four levels. This includes the original two levels that were already submitted, but with significant changes, so it is necessary to download and play the whole mission from the beginning.

New Mod: Sectör Majic

Friday, March 22, 2002, 05:32 | Jonas Wæver |  Comments

We've recieved this mail from Spyder:

Yet another Deus Ex mod has come into existance, before you ignore this message and look at the rest of the news I would like you to just hear me out. If you've ever been a part of a mod that fell a part due to inactivity I've been there! Incompotent leaders? Been there too. And I've been through more mods than you can shake a trout at. Well anyways the point of this message is that the mod Sectör Majic, a spy mod placing the player as a clandestine MJ12 agent, is in need of your help! We particularly need a Modeller who can Animate and Import into DX and we need a Coder who is well adversed in Scripted events and weapon coding. If you think you got what it takes contact either me, SpyderBane at backward@prodigy.net or my co-leader Scozzy at ridman@optonline.net

And if you want proof of my credentials I have posted them on the forums at this link:

Rifts is Gone, but not Completely

Thursday, March 21, 2002, 04:50 | Jonas Wæver |  Comments

The following message is from Paul Nortness of the Rifts mod:

Though not dead, the Rifts mod will disappear. Thanks to someone in the modding "community", we have been asked to remove our site from the web. People wonder why mods disappear so quickly in the Deus Ex community. I have this answer for them. Their is no community. Everyone is so willing to cut the other guy's throat, apperently to be the last mod standing. It is a shame that people feel they must act like this. At any rate, after some retooling, the team will be back with a newly renamed mod and new ideas. The story and basic concept will remain the same, however any references to the Rifts RPG will be gone.

Deus Ex Theme Song: The Fonkey Remix!

Tuesday, March 19, 2002, 20:52 | Ghandaiah |  Comments

Recently I was playing around with the music program ModPlug Tracker. I fooled with the DX theme song, mixed in some different sounds/beats, a recording of me saying "fonkey," and eventually produced the Deus Ex Fonkey Remix. The file is in .mp3 format, is only about two minutes long, and about 800kb in size. Just thought somebody out there might be interested in silly old me. ;)

Got Ghand 18: The One Year Anniversary Episode

Monday, March 11, 2002, 21:47 | Ghandaiah |  Comments

Whew! I've been hanging around this pile of garbage for a while (And when I say pile of garbage I mean Despot).

As of March 8th, Got Ghand was exactly one year old. 18 installments of the article may not seem like much for an entire year, but when you take into account the additional articles I've written - All eight chapters of Twist - And divide the total sum by the number of months in a year? I've technically been delivering biweekly articles to you, the people, for an entire year.

...What a waste of ti-... Er, I mean, you've all been lovely!

Read Got Ghand 18: The Anniversary Episode. It's obviously a landmark in gaming history, and will, of course, be the center of all Deus Ex related conversation material for years to come. Ah! I'm half-asleep again...

Ion at a forum

Monday, March 11, 2002, 03:27 | Winquman |  Comments

Gwog, the former site director and founder of this site, has found a thread at VoodooExtreme where a guy called DrLoomis13 seems to be working at ISA. This is, however, not confirmed. Here is some info he gave, both commenting ISA's name change and DX2:

the news on the name change is that there is no news....i cant really make an official statement, but a decision has been made. speaking of system shock and the name change, a bunch of us actually lobbied for TriOptimum Games for a while. that would have been cool.

...

our AI is VASTLY improved over dx1 already. we hired a badass programmer named paul tozour who's doing some really cool stuff with the AI. the guy that did the AI for the first game is....no longer with the company.

as far as more choice, you have that in spades in dx2. in dx1, you pretty much had to side with nsf when you found out about paul, and had no real choice as to who to believe and whatnot.

in dx2, you will have much more say in similar situations. we're designing it so that your choices will dictate much more about your overall experience.

It looks like we have a real ISA staffer here, but we can't be sure.

New Hosted Site: The Nameless Mod

Wednesday, March 6, 2002, 00:00 | Despot |  Comments

Okay, we have another (w00t!) new hosted site: The Nameless Mod/OTF Mod, which is a spinoff from the numerous pseudo-clans and fanfics on the PDX OTF forum. Here's the Plot behind the mod:

The world of the forum boards is in chaos, it's citizenry divided between 3 major factions. Crime is at an alltime high, people are disappearing and rumors of strange things are abound.

WorldCorp Inc., owned by the eccentric billionaire Scara B. King seeks to gain control of the entire corporate world and will use any means necessary to achieve it's goals. Whether it be corporate espionage, blackmail or murder, Scara will stop at nothing. Some call the tycoon mad, but as he points out, It is a fine line between genius and insanity.

The Llama religious fanatics seek not corporate power but power over peoples minds. The high priests of this bizarre Llama worshiping religion have recruited millions, and thousands more join each day. At the very top of their hierarchy is the one they call The Leader, shrouded in mystery he controls everything in their religion. Citizens who join become virtual slaves of the high priests, turning over everything they own to The Leader. They must quit their jobs and work at the Llama temples, deep underground. It has even been whispered that The Leader will one day take them in his UFO to the planet of the Llamas where they will have utter bliss.

The third power in this strange and twisted world is the Goat worshippers, also a religion, its origins are shrouded in mystery. No one knows who leads this cult; only a select few are permitted to join. And if chosen they are must leave their homes and journey to the mysterious Goat city. Noone knows where the city is, many have tried to locate it, but the Goat followers exact a deadly revenge on anyone attempting to find it. It has been rumoured that this cult is responsible for the disappearing citizenry, but no one know what they may do with their kidnapped victims.

Points for a novel concept, and good luck to them in their efforts. :)

Monday, March 4, 2002, 00:00 | Despot |  Comments

Okay, we have a new Hosted Site here, and it's called, quite simply, "DX Model Site." As you might guess, it's dedicated to DX models, of which there are several currently available, and more on the way. You can also make requests of the guy who runs the site, AlvinD. Somehow, one gets the feeling he'll be getting quite a few of those, considering the number of mods in need of models....anyway, welcome to AlvinD and his site, and may live long and prosper.

Face interviewed on Modpages.com

Sunday, March 3, 2002, 13:05 | Despot |  Comments

Deus Diablo has sent word of an interview with Face about his Disclosure mod: release date, the story, his work on DXMP maps, etc. Here's a quote:

Reaper Man: The story feels like something you might see in the X-Files. Was this much of an influence? What else do you feel influenced the mod?

Face: You could say that I have been influenced by The X-Files in some respects, especially for the very first mission. It’s true that J.C. meets a man who claims he wants to help him, and it’s true that the meeting takes place somewhere remote and eerie, somewhat reminiscent of the meetings between Mr X and Mulder in the early X-Files. However, the story as a whole isn’t an “X-File”, and as it unfolds you will understand that the central plot is a real conspiracy, something that we should all be concerned about, because it really could happen / exist, ha ha. The Disclosure Demo doesn’t really reveal much about the story - this was, of course, purely intentional. After playing the demo the player should be thinking about some of the events in the mission, and what exactly is going on. There are points in the complete mod when the player won't know what's going on, they won't know who to trust, who to believe or who they can rely on.

Cassandra Project Interview

Saturday, February 23, 2002, 12:38 | Jonas Wæver |  Comments

We have recieved word that epiGamer has interviewed The Narcissus Entity concerning The Cassandra Project.

eG - BremXJones is best know as a writer, how important is the story in The Cassandra Project? Should we expect some mind-blowing plot twists?

NE - A twist in a plot is a fairly weak gambit for a writer. Not knowing what is going to happen next doesn't imply that what's coming next is utterly unpredictable. That said, we hope that certain elements would be a surprise to the gamer. Even if the central story arc of the first episode keeps a little too close to the conspiracy theory riff, the peripheral aspects contain elements rarely seen in a videogame to date. For example, no videogame character this side of Kingpin has a mouth fouler than Bobby Chaos 3.2. On a less puerile note, the work was approached by all as any creative enterprise in another media would be. There will also be at least three funny jokes.

Read the full interview and get a glimpse and some brand new shots of TCP here: http://www.epigamer.com/article.php?a=47.

Warren Spector speaks to PlayStation.com

Wednesday, February 20, 2002, 06:25 | Jonas Wæver |  Comments

Recently, Warren Spector spoke to PlayStation.com. Here's a bit:

On ears:

All of our figures now have ears. That was one of my big pet peeves; we only had 300 poly figures in the PC version. Now we have many thousands of polys to play with, so all of our characters have actual, modelled ears. I'm sure all of the players will be thrilled... hey, it's a big deal to me!

Sorry, I had to include that. Thanks (once again) to Andy M. We should promote this guy to "Our Man in the Field™". The article can be found right here.

A new DX PS2 (not DX2) preview has been posted at The Armchair Empire. Not that they've posted other DX PS2 previews before, I mean that other DX PS2 previews have been posted before... other places... yeah, that's it.

Nifty new utility from the Gamespy is now available: Gamespy Desktop. Basically, it goes out to 47 gaming sites on the GameSpy Network and sets the POTD as the desktop wallpaper--at intervals of your choice, it would seem. Sooo, if you're interested in seeing the PDX POTD on your desktop (or any other Planet site's, for that matter), download.

Skyward Fires Mod Update

Sunday, February 17, 2002, 15:42 | Evil_InVasion |  Comments

Kamikaze reports to us that:

I've removed the "Chasing the Wind" track from the music list, because it's too old and sucks by now However, I've replaced "The Abandoned City" music with a new one, because I've lost the old one ... And the 2nd new track - "Back for Business", played when the player returns to SkyWard city later in the game. So head to the MUSIC section and get the cool tracks now.

Check out Skyward fires here.

Got Ghand 17: "Snurkle."

Sunday, February 17, 2002, 00:04 | Ghandaiah |  Comments

Uh-oh.

It's me again. And I managed to throw together another completely stupid article of everything that means nothing when put together in one wonderfully composed opus of nonsense. The next Got Ghand can be found STARING DOWN INTO THE BLACK PITS OF SARRLAC. Or "through this link." Whatever. Just... when you're reading this one, folks... Just remember... Drugs are bad, mmkay?

  • There has been an update at PartyZone.

  • The Community Based Patch has lost a coder. They also report that version 0.6 will be hosted by one of the [DEA] servers soon.

  • Ordinance has got a new team member, Bub. He will be writing on the story for the mod.

  • UNATCO Born is in a desperate need for mappers and coders. They also report they will host a multiplayer server this sunday called UnatcoBornMP.

New PlanetDeusEx Winamp Skin

Friday, February 15, 2002, 18:22 | King Kashue |  Comments

Hey there folks, King Kashue here...I know you're used to seeing me prattle on about a bunch of nonsense in this space...rambling aimlessly about my article...using a bunch of incoherent references to get your attention...well, that's not going to happen here...no siree, gonna stay on point...got something to say...no rambling for me...uh...what was I saying...oh, yeah

I just did my first Winamp skin, actually had a lot of fun doing it, and wouldn't ya know, it's a PlanetDeusEx skin...yep, that's right, now you can think of PDX when listening to all of that music you "shared" off of Napster before it got closed down by "The Man"...

Check out a screen shot (which looks a bit washed-out to me), and download it...SUCKA!!! (right click on the link and "save target as")

A special thanks goes out to Reaper Man for the use of his aug buttons... ;) (Better?)

PC Zone boosts Deus Ex

Friday, February 15, 2002, 09:16 | slicer |  Comments

Having suffered a while of quietness, erp..., Dennis Publishing Ltd.'s PC Zone Magazine has published Deus Ex mods and maps in its Extended Play section this month. A few DXMP maps are placed on the Cover CD as well as reviews of the maps, a map of the month is given as well, but you will have to find out yourself ;) Seems like they are giving us a boost as a few sites are listed, PlanetDeusEx.com, Deus Ex Ed, DEA and also the Disclosure Mod site. Check it out with the March 2002 Edition, Issue #113, Page 144.

Deus Ex 2 also is their Top Story for the month. Check out their rather amusing preview ;)

Edge of Dark Shuts Down

Thursday, February 14, 2002, 13:51 | Jonas Wæver |  Comments

We have recieved this e-mail:

Edge of Dark will no longer be published as a Deus Ex mod. While development of the game will continue, we are currently exploring other engines and commercial opportunities. I had decided long ago not to publish the entire game for the current DX engine, but I did want to publish what we had started. In the end, I felt it was no longer worth the amount of time to continue producing this for Deus Ex. A word of warning to those that continue: Stop starting new mods and help the ones that are in existence. The community isn't large enough to sustain the amount of mods being 'created', and the DX community shoots itself in the foot by doing this: More=Less. As well, to the creators of DX, for DX2 you would do well to make installing and playing a mod more user friendly, and perhaps take a note from Valve and be more active in nurturing the mod community, I felt Ion's participation in this area is sorely lacking. Best of luck to everybody, I'll see you around:)

Solidus Snake sends word that he's making a mod based on the Final Fantasy movie. The working title is War Eyes. They already have a modeller, a skinner and plenty of voice actors, but they need mappers and a good webmaster. Mail Solidus if you want in.

DX PS2 Main Theme

Tuesday, February 12, 2002, 20:07 | Despot |  Comments

ISA has sent another bit of coolness from the PS2 version of Deus Ex in the form of the DX Main Theme of the game--re-recorded with a 20+ piece orchestra. Think Alex Brandon goodness, without the synth sound. Color me impressed! The MP3 can be found here, and weighs in at 2.13 MB.

LAN Party Idea

Tuesday, February 12, 2002, 07:04 | Jonas Wæver |  Comments

Phoenix sent us this mail:

Hi there! I myself is a mapper for Deus Ex, and I came up with this brilliant idea. Call it "early alpha" stage idea if you want to. I was thinking that all the modders from the Deus Ex community could get together and have a LAN party (Local Area Network). This might not even happen, but I would appriciate it if those who are just a LITTLE interrested in participating, would send me a mail including their nickname and where they live. Remember, it might not even happen, but if I know where you live, I could find the most central location, and then maybe this alpha stage idea will hit beta. Who knows?

Send your mail to: fenixs85@hotmail.com if you're interested.

The Somnolent Mod

Tuesday, February 12, 2002, 03:34 | Jonas Wæver |  Comments

Aunt Betty informs us that he's making his own one man mod called Somnolent. It's his first ever single player project aside from skinning. Here it is. No, back there...

Another thing is that he and Damocles has decided that he's a bit too freelance for Vampire, but he's still in the Redsun mod as a skinner, and of course The Nameless Mod.

  • DXDune will get a new webpage within a few weeks. They also report that they will not release the story until the first map is finished.

  • Penumbra had a slight change in storyline. And they still need mappers, so if you are one, pay them a visit!

  • Ordinance's homepage has had a few updates, so why don't you go and check it out? They also have a new public relations team.

DX2 Concept Art: Day 5

Saturday, February 9, 2002, 00:00 | Despot |  Comments

Well, all good things must end as they say, and so must the supply of Cool Art. This pair of baddies is the last of the bunch, and the best of it as well, so to speak. We have a mysterious "Creature X" that looks like a mech-augmented interpretation of some type of were-creature or perhaps an ape, and an arachnoid heavy bot, which appears to be packing a heavy punch. Check 'em out in the usual spot.

And thus endeth the display of Art. Now, back to waiting impatiently for more art, screenshots, a demo, the release...waiting, waiting, waiting. Arrrrgh. :p

Enjoy!

We just got this mail from Aesthesia, leader of the Target Sighted mod:

Weapon #7 is up in the mean time. Where is weapon 6? //classified// Seriously though, issues regarding the mod have come up, and in the interest of making it the greatest thing known to man-kind, I've had to withhold some info, but I'll be making up for it in other places ;)

Right now I'm putting together a map for the TS community to meet on, but it will be limited to a non-dedicated server for now.

Oh, and finally, we still don't have a coder (which we NEED) so I've begun teaching myself...scared?

So no, I haven't been slacking off; just working towards bettering it for everyone based on the vast amount of feedback I've recieved.

Tutorial Project on Hold

Saturday, February 2, 2002, 07:27 | Jonas Wæver |  Comments

We have recieved this e-mail from Dark Templar:

Some of you may remember some news posted a while ago that a new tutorial site was going to open up that would give people a very visual learning reference for using the Deus Ex SDK (UnrealEd).

Well I have some semi-bad news, for the moment putting the project on the back burner becuase of that evil universal constant... time. We just don't have enough of it what with working on mods aswell as other things.

But on the flip side there is good news, seeing as we aren't launching soon we will have more time to write tutorials when we have the time so that when it's up you'll have a whole host of tutorials to help you learn.

As of now we're not certain when we are actually launching but it could be in anywhere up to a months time :-(

DXW Story

Monday, January 28, 2002, 10:17 | Jonas Wæver |  Comments

The first part of the DXW story has been released. Here's a retainer. The whole story will be up on their website soon.

The Great Russian War of 2010

The war started when a particularly cutthroat Russian nationalist, Vladimir Romanov, came to power as the Czar or Russia. He wanted to restore the dignity that Russia had lost in World War II. It made a surprise in invasion on two fronts. On the western front is got as far as Germany, Austria, and Italy before there was much resistance. Then France, the Spain, and the United Kingdom sent troops to try to make a line across the German-Austrian-Italian border. This was going well until Czar Romanov realized that the troops sent through Mongolia and China were easily gaining ground and sent half of them to aid the Western Front. These additional troops overwhelmed the European defenses and it looked like Russia had won. However, by this time the United States army had fully mobilized and arrived in Europe. It backed up the hurt European powers to surround the Russian army. Most of the troops surrendered, except for a few pockets of resistance that didn’t prove to be too much trouble to destroy. The troops on the Eastern Front realized their danger and gave themselves up too, despite Czar Romanov’s orders to continue the invasion.

Invisible News

Monday, January 28, 2002, 08:35 | Jonas Wæver |  Comments

I quote:

I have posted a Star Wars mod, made by me and Anxiety. Includes Lightsaber/Blaster/Rifle/And More...

These MiniMods will be made in a Series,

Shades vs Humans {Military vs Evil Creatures)

Star Wars (Laser Beams and Lightsabers)

Dark Times (Magic and Medieval Battle)

The [NSF] Mod is comming along nicely, Beta Tests went over good yesterday, only a few problems.

1. Automatic Weapons do not work for clients (Sound Issue)

2. Smoke Grenades are very short, with some video cards.

Unfortunately since my last news post I STILL haven't gotten a response from modellers/animators so I might release Beta 1.0 without weapons models (they will be textured though).

And this was from Tommy Downing a.k.a. Dark from Invisible Online.

"Counterfeit" Design Doc Goes Public

Sunday, January 27, 2002, 20:12 | Ghandaiah |

I've made a final personal decision to never use the Counterfeit plot idea again, so I'm opening the design doc for the once-active mod to the public. It can be seen here.

Oh, and even though the mod is no longer on the mod list, you can still download the released demo just by going to the site, or just straight through FilePlanet. I don't know how much longer the actual site will be up, though. I think there's a Mods Page or somethin' in the works for PDX.

Preachers interview

Sunday, January 27, 2002, 00:37 | Despot |  Comments

Well, a wee bit late here (grumbles about the remissive news crew), but there is an interview on DX-M.com, in which the lead of the Preachers mod, SchizoSlayer, answers various questions about his effort. A random quote:

What inspired you to start up the Preachers project?

The combination of playing Max Payne and watching Ghost In The Shell on my new DVD player I think. Deus Ex didn't come into it, all I saw there was a solution to our engine problems. Perhaps Deus Ex is what keeps me making it but it's not what started it.

A brand new Augmentation has been added to the features page, designed for use by the medic class ;)

New Mod: Digital Being

Sunday, January 20, 2002, 09:20 | Jonas Wæver |  Comments

We have another new mod: Digital Being, started by Philippe Parker. Here's a teaser:

This is the digital century. Everything in this world has to do with technology and computers. Welcome to a world where this is irrelevant. This world exists only in the minds of the pawns and in the circuits of computers. Traveling through fiber cables and phone lines. This is the digital world.

A whole new experience. An escape. You are you or are you? Everything here is real, you, your friends, your foes. Your job, the night clubs you go to. Even your personal computer and cell phone exists.

A whole new concept for the Deus EX world. A digital world inside computers all over the world. Free play, or follow a custom story line. You decide how to live your life.

They need a determined people who are interested in developing the mod. More information can be found on their website, or by sending a mail.

New Deus Ex Mod

Thursday, January 17, 2002, 07:25 | Winquman |  Comments

We just got a mail from Jim Frazee about a new mod he's starting:

Attention Deus Ex Mod Programmers,

My name is SciFiTechGuy. Currently I am working on a story for a new Deus Ex mod. I am in great need of experienced programmers who are willing to work with me. The task I require of you is unique, but easy (in your case). I have no experience working with the Unreal Engine or it's development kits. I am attempting to create a continuation of Deus Ex through the form of a mod. But I need developers to help me. The plan for the game is fairly simple: The game will be using the same maps from the original Deus Ex. All that is needed are modifications to the maps to upgrade them with the concurrent storyline. I do not require any assistance in the story. I need only experienced programmers to work with on maps. If you are interested, please email me at scifitechguy@attbi.com.

The name of the mod is Deus Ex-Operation: Machina. The mod has no homepage yet.

Havok 1.6 released

Thursday, January 17, 2002, 04:36 | Despot |  Comments

VoodooExtreme has a report that version 1.6 of Havok's real-time physics engine (website) has been released, which includes a new technology know as MOPP (Memory Optimised Partial Polytope). A description of the tech follows:

MOPP (Memory Optimised Partial Polytope) is a completely new way of compressing bounding volume data for arbitrary polygon meshes. It has a dramatically reduced memory footprint compared with traditional bounding volume approaches without sacrificing any runtime performance. Developed exclusively by Havok engineers, it is fully integrated into the 1.6 release of the Havok SDK.

MOPP technology enables game developers to create worlds of a greater size and scope than was previously possible. Other features of the release include further integration of Havok physics with the leading rendering engines and modellers, such as Max and Maya.

Do I hear a "w00t"?

WS/witchboy Gamespot Interview

Tuesday, January 15, 2002, 18:14 | Despot |  Comments

Right on the heels of the DX2 first look comes a 5 page interview with Warren Spector and Harvey Smith on Gamespot (thanks, _Cyborg_). They talk about Deus Ex 2, oddly enough, and its development, technology, and planned features. Here's a quote of interest to the Deus Ex MP crowd:

GS: Though Deus Ex shipped as a single-player game, Ion Storm released a free multiplayer add-on some months later. How was it received? Will Deus Ex 2 have multiplayer out of the box, and if so, what will it be like?

WS: The multiplayer patch was well received, if not as widely played as we might have hoped. Everyone who played it and took the time to tell us about his or her experience seemed to appreciate how different the Deus Ex multiplayer experience was from the rest of the multiplayer games out there. And that was our goal, really. We wanted to see if our character and experience differentiating gameplay tools worked as well in a multiplayer setting as in a single-player one, and we got the answer we were hoping for. Having said that, the work involved in creating a genuinely unique multiplayer experience and in supporting a multiplayer community turned out to be...significant...and we need to keep our focus on the single-player experience. There's a petition out there right now asking us to do multiplayer versions of our future games, but I really think we're better off--and players are better served--if we focus on what we do best, which is providing a first-rate, single-player, story-based, character-driven experience.

There is also a new piece of concept art available.

New tutorial site

Tuesday, January 15, 2002, 10:50 | Winquman |  Comments

We just got word from Lawrence about a new tutorial site called T.I.N.A.:

A new tutorial site , T.I.N.A, spawned in the PDX forums is being put together by myself, Dark Templar and Phas. The tutorials are designed to easy to read and understand. Our site is already constructed and we will be hosted on PDX but we require a few more tutorial authors before we can launch the site. We need people who are knowledgable in Conedit, Unreal Ed, Unreal scripting scripting and perhaps moddling. You need not have experiance in all of these things, In fact knowledge in one area would be enough. You must also be able to put your knowledge into understandable text form :) If you wish to help us out in expanding the DX modding community please email me at Trestkon@hotmail.com.

So what are you waiting for?

DX Community Mod

Trestkon is starting a different kind of mod (I think it's safe to say). He posted about it in the forums, the thing is: if you're part of the DX community, you can just make a post on the thread, and Trestkon will give you a part in his level. Remember to tell him what kind of part you want, and maybe give a few suggestions to the story.

Thanks to Aunt Betty, who pointed it out, and is skinning for the mod too.

New Mod: Hidden Agenda

Monday, January 14, 2002, 05:17 | Jonas Wæver |  Comments

Prey is working on a new mod called Hidden Agenda. It is to be created entirely by him, and he is currently working on early map designs and a completely original story based on the early days of the DX universe. The mod takes place some years before the events in DX, and many of the DX characters will appear in the early stages of their careers.

He doesn't want to give away too much of the story, but he can reveal that it includes an early prototype of Paul going crazy in the city, and a newly created JC prototype sent out on his first ever official mission to track down Paul and find out who is behind his escape and subsequent trail of terror.

Prey is also working on the script and some original artwork for DE: Hidden Agenda, and will pass on any work he has then the time comes.

Got Ghand 16: "Of Riddles and Pigeons."

Friday, January 11, 2002, 22:53 | Ghandaiah |  Comments

Now that I'm back from my week-and-a-half-long trip to Paris, I can finally deliver the next installment of Got Ghand. This one deals with a cigar-smoking pigeon named Pete, me spewing some silly detective dialogue, and changing the United States currency to the goat. Also included are two... rather difficult... riddles. The article can be seen through this link, but you REALLY don't want to go here. Honest. It's rather disturbing.

New Mod in the Planning

Friday, January 11, 2002, 08:26 | Jonas Wæver |  Comments

We got this email from Metalhead:

I currently have plans in the works for a mod based on Grey Fox from the Metal Gear series that will take place between the Zanzibar revolt from Metal Gear 2 and the Shadow Moses incident of Metal Gear Solid. The general idea is to make it a Metal Gear style game, including mimicking the Metal Gear Solid inventory style, camera style, etc. I was going to use Max Payne, but without direct access to the movement/ai code... Though it may step on Konami's toes a bit, I hope they'll understand the views of a devoted gamer. Currently it's a solo effort, and as of yet I have nothing to show, but any and all help would be appreciated. I think it's time to really show what can be done with the Unreal Engine. Send all mail to metul_hed@metallica.com

Now, somebody make a utility like Darkloader for Deus Ex, mmmkay?

Thanks to Shacknews for pointing out this post on PS2.IGN.com, which says the release date for the PS2 version of Deus Ex has been pushed back from the beginning of February (not a January release, as the article says). Expect to see the game in "mid- to late-February"...appropriately vague, no? :p

Looking through Deus Ex mod sites is a little like walking through a ghost town. Most sites haven't been updated for months - in some cases for nearly a year. So, please, if you are a mod leader, try to update your site. Well, here is what I've found:

  • It looks like the Cassandra Project team has finally decided to update their homepage. I suggest you go and pay them a visit to get more info. You can also read the news post by Jonas Wæver below.

New Mod: Prey

Saturday, January 5, 2002, 05:18 | Jonas Wæver |  Comments

We have recieved a mail from ZEN, that he is starting a new mod. The mod is called prey, and he will need modellers, mappers, scripters, voice actors, a webmaster and especially a texture artist. If you wish to apply, send a mail to him. Here's the information displayed on his temporary recruiting site:

Welcome to a universe where everything matters, in a fully fledged city complete with gunshops, supermarkets, temples, government buildings, towering apartments, airports, research labs, a NASA space launch facility, slums, gladiatorial arenas, bookstores and even a red light district, welcome to the city of ANKH, and the world of Prey. Something is in this world, a threat you can't see. It may be staring you in the face, you just don't know.

Most games require you to think fast, shoot fast, and live. This time, just living will be a challenge.

What you can't see can't hurt you, right?

Currently, they're looking for 3D modellers, texture artists and mappers.
