Where to Address Your News Tuesday, November 16, 2004, 12:34 | Jonas Wæver | Comments Now that the PlanetDeusEx news is getting archived and a couple of poor students will lose their (unpaid volunteer) jobs, you may be interested to hear where to send your news submissions from now on. Firstly, we're planning on setting up the News forums to let people post there, which will make it a good place to post news you noticed about the DX franchise or any mods you're keeping track of. Secondly, your best bet would probably be to submit your news to one of the other (and hugely underappreciated) Deus Ex fan sites such as DeusEx-Machina.com, DXEditing.com, and DeusExGaming.com. Each of them has an e-mail address for news submissions, and if you have a modification about which you often have news to post, we recommend you set up a mail group which sends to the following e-mails: news@deusexgaming.com news@dxediting.com eberon@ttlg.com dave@ttlg.com This should make sure your news is posted on all the most frequently visited fan sites. However, until the PDX news is archived, you are very welcome to still submit your news to news@planetdeusex.com. |
FunLine City, a Welcome Surprise! Tuesday, November 16, 2004, 12:17 | Jonas Wæver | Comments Until the news section of PDX closes down, we shall valiantly keep up the posting of news. Thus, I bring you a message from [A]Kiriyama of the multiplayer mod (yes, DXMP mod!) FunLine City. According to Kiriyama, the mod is so far progressed that the first content from the team will soon be released. FunLine City is basically a town for DXMP, sort of a little world with various locations to visit, such as bases, shops, tournament houses, museums, etc. The mod will also have scripts to stop players from cheating and the likes. To aid the progress of this mod, Kiriyama is on the lookout for talented mappers to implement more interesting locations in the maps and add their own ideas. You are encouraged to visit the Wanted section of the FunLine City site to learn more. |
To everything (turn, turn, turn)... Monday, November 15, 2004, 00:00 | Despot | Comments The folks over at GameSpy have let me know that they've decided it's no longer feasible for them to keep PDX news active, and so are planning to archive the front page of the site on the 30th of November. Don't worry though, the Forums will stay in place and hosted sites will continue. Not much will actually change, in a way, although you'll probably see less acts of Despotism. The site is over 6 years old, and has been a Planet for almost 4. This wouldn't have been possible without the news crew (Jonas, slicer, Trestkon, and Winquman) and staff writers (Ghandaiah, Kaigen, and King Kashue), that kept the flow of information running smoothly. Also worthy of note are the tremendous efforts of Site Director, Gwog, who put far more effort into the site than I ever did. And let's not forget the wonderful team of forum moderators (Dark Templar, KingKashue, OiNutter, Phasmatis, and Treskton), who I have been able to trust to run the forums practically un-attended. I'd like to thank the folks over at ION Storm for two excellent games that have wiled away many hours of my time. I hope they can all find a place where they can continue to make great games. Harvey "witchboy" Smith and Tara Thomas deserve special mention for their help in the affairs of the site. The list goes on and on...the past staff, the modders, GameSpy for hosting us, et cetera, et cetera. Huge amounts of work have been put into this site by many people and I'm grateful to every one of them. If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions on how to archive the site, please let me know: despot@planetdeusex.com |
TNM Weekly Makeshift News Saturday, November 13, 2004, 13:28 | Jonas Wæver | Comments Due to website trouble (the authorities have been informed), the much - much, much, MUCH - delayed weekly news about The Nameless Mod has been posted on the public forums of the mod this weekend. It contains a rough rundown of what's been going on with the mod during the last week or so, as well as a new POTW which contains a snippet of conversation in an attempt to make up for the four or five POTW's which never came due to server trouble on GameSpy's part. Here's another link, just to make sure you don't miss it. The post will be re-posted on the actual website once it gets back up. |
Aftermath Looking for Webdesigner Friday, November 12, 2004, 05:49 | Jonas Wæver | Comments Darren Eastes aka. Dazza of the Aftermath mod is searching for somebody capable of making a good website for the modification. Flash skills would be a definite plus. Contact him at dazza_aftermathmod@hotmail.com. |
Warren Spector leaves Ion Storm Monday, November 8, 2004, 15:12 | slicer | Comments After months of speculation, Eidos has now confirmed that Warren is parting with Ion Storm after many years of service. However, he will remain as an IP Consultant for Eidos. Read all about it here. |
The 8th Order Looking for More Team Members Sunday, November 7, 2004, 14:04 | Jonas Wæver | Comments The 8th Order mod for Deus Ex 1 sends word that their crew now counts one mapper (possibly 2), one coder, one skinner and one modeller. This isn't really enough to make a nicely sized DX mod, so they need some more members. In particular, the team is in need of mappers. If you're interested in mapping or have any other modding skills whatsoever, e-mail Graeme Kennedy at darkangelz123@hotmail.com or turkey_assasin@hotmail.com. You can review the plot, weapons, etc. of the mod on their website which is still, however, under construction. |
Women in Game Design: Denise Fulton Friday, November 5, 2004, 14:20 | Despot | Comments Thanks to Gwog for the heads up on this NY Times article about women in gaming, in which Denise Fulton gets a brief mention, as "an executive producer overseeing a new installment in the Deus Ex series." There's a nifty pic of her standing in front of some Invisible War concept art, and art from something that definitely isn't Invisible War...possibly from the next installment? |
ConEdit to screenplay format via Python Monday, November 1, 2004, 10:04 | Despot | Comments scottbsp from Burden of 80 Proof sends word of a Python script he wrote to convert an exported ConEdit file into a close approximation of screenplay format. Those of you who are recording dialogue for DX mods may find this useful. Hit up 80 Proof's Files section for download links. |
Deus Ex Music Arrangements for Piano Monday, November 1, 2004, 09:56 | Despot | Comments One of our stalwart forum members, Sivak Drac, has submitted some excellent piano versions of various Deus Ex musics: He expects to be submitting more in the near future, so stay tuned. |
How to complete Deus Ex... quickly Thursday, October 28, 2004, 12:59 | slicer | Comments Rumour has it that Phil managed to complete Deus Ex in less than 2 hours 30 minutes. Check out his video evidence here. No cheats, no logins from memory, no exploits! So, if you think you can beat the time, drop the news team an e-mail detailing how you cheated your way through ;) |
UNATCO Born Looking for Mappers Saturday, October 23, 2004, 13:25 | Jonas Wæver | Comments The core of the matter: The UNATCO Born team need a mapper who knows what he's doing, to work on their Hong Kong level. The team would very much like to get the mod done, and this is what they need to do that. You can mail to fender2k1 at this address: fender2k1@gmail.com if you got some skills and you're interested in helping out. Check their website for more info on the project. And let me throw my own personal recommendation into that as well: This mod is promising. The concept is great and the maps look great. Help them out, it'll be worth it. |
ZODIAC Soundtrack for Download Wednesday, October 20, 2004, 06:03 | Jonas Wæver | Comments Just as you were starting to recover from the shock of ZODIAC finally being finished, Steve Foxon pops out of nowhere to say that he's put up the mod's soundtrack for download from his website, Orak's Music Emporium. Ain't that great? Free music! |
Invisible War for download Monday, October 11, 2004, 22:46 | Despot | Comments Word from the GameSpy Informant is that Deus Ex: Invisible War is now available for download--just head over Direct2Drive.com and put down your $19.95. This is a good deal for the game, and doesn't require a shipping/handling charge to boot, so if you're on a broadband connection and have twenty bucks you don't need, get downloading! |
Zodiac Finished! Saturday, October 9, 2004, 03:16 | Jonas Wæver | Comments The third and final chapter of Steve Tack's ZODIAC mod for Deus Ex is now complete and has been made available for download from his website. As usual, it is available in two versions: an automatic Windows-based installer, or a Macintosh version that can be manually installed. Within a few days, Tack will be releasing a full version including all 6 missions and making the mod available from a few additional mirrors. Do I hear a faint "W00T!" growing in the distance? |
Stellars Mod Saturday, October 9, 2004, 03:04 | Jonas Wæver | Comments Stellar has released a small mod which adds some interesting options to Deus Ex. Among other things, the mod allows you to shoot through the walls with Penetrator weapons, fire stunning ammunition (USP, Enforcer, Neostad), and see through walls with the Noctovisor. It's been up on our DX1 mod page for a while, but apparently we forgot to post about it in the news, hehe. It's the last mod on the list. |
Shoot to Kill Part 1 Released Thursday, September 23, 2004, 03:16 | Jonas Wæver | Comments HelioWalton has released the first part of his single player modification, Shoot to Kill. As mentioned before, you play a hitman called Exodus employed by HelioWalton to kill three rivalling mappers from the community. The mod features an intro cinematic, new weapons and a new player skin for Exodus. You can download it directly with this link, or visit HelioWalton's website for more information. |

TNM Updated Again Sunday, September 19, 2004, 09:52 | Jonas Wæver | Comments This week's update of The Nameless Mod brings two new audio files: A sample of Trestkon's voice with a filter applied to make it fit his character better, and one of the songs from the TNM sound track, which has been donated by the Danish band Frog'n'Care. A poll has also been created on the mod's public forums, in which you're encouraged to express your opinion on Trestkon's sample. Pay the website a visit for more details and various relevant links. |
Zodiac updates Tuesday, September 7, 2004, 00:00 | Despot | Comments Word from the Zodiac mod is good--Part 3 is in its final stages, and some screenshots are also available. See here. |
The Nameless Mod Update(s) Sunday, September 5, 2004, 14:00 | Trestkon | Comments The Nameless Mod has updated their website several times since the last news posted here. The weapons models have been getting an overhaul, levels are being completed, music and sound effects are getting done...but don't believe me, check it out for yourself! This post was brought to you by the word "fonkey" |
AR Tray Spy v2.0 Thursday, September 2, 2004, 13:38 | Jonas Wæver | Comments Remember AR Tray Spy? The utility made by Altered Realms to keep track of game servers in your system tray? Well, version two of that program has now been released. The second version makes use of the .NET Framework 1.1 and will only run on .NET compatible versions of Windows. A few of the more interesting changes from the first version are:
Just in case you still don't know what I'm talking about, Altered Realms describe their program as "a free (read: no adware/spyware) tool to help you continuously monitor and optionally administer your favorite Game servers. Each server gets its own spot in the Windows system tray where you'll get instant feedback on the number of users on the server, with the ability to immediately jump into the game with a single mouse click." And suffice it to say, the utility supports Deus Ex... assuming there are actually any DX servers left out there. |
Interview with Eidos' Rob Dyer Thursday, August 26, 2004, 07:41 | Winquman | Comments There is an interview with Rob Dyer, Head of Eidos, at 1UP.com. Among other things a Deus Ex 3 and Thief 4 is mentioned, as well as another game with Ms. Croft. 1UP: What should we expect from Eidos in the near future? Dyer: We're going to try to get more of a consumer focus into our games. Deus Ex: Invisible War was a good game with solid reviews, but not enough people bought it. We'll fix that in the future. There definitely will be a Deus Ex 3. People want another Thief, too. We'll make that series more modern, though...the medieval thing's run its course. The coming year will bring some really new, innovative titles, plus comebacks from many brands gamers are already familiar with. Read the interview here. There are also some discussions about the interview here, both in regards to the Thief and Deus Ex series. |
Shoot to Kill by HelioWalton Wednesday, August 25, 2004, 05:03 | Jonas Wæver | Comments I'm quite embarrassed about the delay, but I just found a three days old mail from HelioWalton sitting in my inbox. He said that he's been working on a new mod entitled Shoot to Kill, where you play a hitman employed by HelioWalton, who sends you to kill three other mappers from the community to raise Helio's popularity. An interesting concept not unlike that of TNM. The mod will be released in three episodes (I assume that would be one episode per target) of which the first is nearly completed. The only thing which remains to be done is getting a song converted to UMX. For this job, HelioWalton needs somebody who knows how to use Modplug or another tracker program to help him. You may contact him at heliowalton@hotmail.com for more information about the job. |
Snowblind aka. Deus Ex: Clan Wars Friday, August 20, 2004, 06:35 | Jonas Wæver | Comments The latest Danish issue of the magazine Gamereactor had a small news item on a game called Snowblind, in development by Crystal Dynamics. Gamereactor said that "According to Gamereactor's sources, Snowblind started out as the next Deus Ex-game." They said that while the game had changed a lot during the course of development, occasional traces of Warren Spector would still surface during the presentation of the game at this year's E3, which took place behind closed doors. On IGN's profile page, the game is called "Snowblind, also known as: Deus Ex: Clan Wars". IGN also has a preview from E3 of Snowblind, which concludes: Designed for the Xbox, PS2, and PC, Snowblind is an online game, enabling up to 16 players to vie at once. The game features Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, and several online modes the team wasn't ready to reveal just yet. Due in "winter" 2004, Crystal D's game has the potential to be exceptional in many ways; the ideas are very good, and the game is attractive on its own. The key is execution and honestly, we wonder a bit if the game has enough individuality to carve out its own space. We'll have more as soon as humanly possible. |
New TNM Weapon Screenshots Sunday, August 15, 2004, 13:40 | Jonas Wæver | Comments Three new screenshots of weapons in TNM have been uploaded to their website in this week's update. They depict the pumpgun, the techno-steel gloves and the blow pipe, respectively. You should most definitely check them out. |
Wan Chai Music Extended Friday, August 13, 2004, 14:45 | Jonas Wæver | Comments Dynamo has created an extended version of the music for the Wan Chai market in Hong Kong. It's now 8 minutes long and 10 megabytes large. You can download it from our DX1 > Files > Music section. But then again, to save you some time you could just click this link. |
THE REBORN Website Updated Wednesday, August 11, 2004, 07:58 | Jonas Wæver | Comments THE REBORN is still alive (which, of course, you would expect them to be after 2 weeks, the DX community isn't THAT bad) but they're also taking care of the PR, it would seem. Today, they've uploaded six new screenshots to show off a bunch of models they got from a Swedish freelancer two years ago (I didn't even know they'd been working that long, but it does explain quite a lot). The weapons had no hands or animations, so they had to take care of that themselves. A couple of level designers have also volunteered to help speed up the development a bit, and they're currently considering the applications. They're quite optimistic, and expect to announce some new team members in a week or two. It was of course nice to see that there are still active modders in the community, but additional mappers would be a great help, so don't hold yourselves back if you want to join the project. |
DX: Best RPG Ever According to PCFormat Tuesday, August 10, 2004, 13:28 | Jonas Wæver | Comments Deus Diablo dropped us a note that this month's edition of PCFormat featured a list of RPG's in their Best Of... section in which Deus Ex ranked no less than number one! Of course whether DX counts as an RPG can be debated, but it certainly contains a few aspects of the genre, and in any case, I think we can all agree that it's a great game. The list goes like so:

TNM Weekly Update Tuesday, August 10, 2004, 13:23 | Jonas Wæver | Comments Well, I'm sorry that TNM takes up so much space on this site, but since I'm involved in it, I know what's going on, and if anybody else sends me some news I will be damn sure to post it! It's not like the community is vibrating with news these days anyway. End of rant, commence news. The Nameless Mod's website has received the customary weekend update, albeit slightly too late (despite of what the update says, don't trust the propaganda). Firstly, there's a bunch of info on how things have progressed since last month's update, then there's the new POTW of an unspecified part of Forum City, and to top it all off, Phasmatis dropped by with a couple of screenshots of newly updated weapon skins. He also left a promise of entirely new models which will be displayed in next week's update, so remember to drop by in a week to check them out. |
TNM in Need of Sound Tech Saturday, July 31, 2004, 16:09 | Jonas Wæver | Comments The Nameless Mod have ended their poll from last week about how much humour you'd like in the mod. The results have been posted on their website, along with a new Picture of the Week. Their progress bar has also been updated a bit, and a new vacancy has been announced: The mod is in need of a competent sound technician. Applicants need to be able to process the voice acting files and preferably create entirely new sounds for various items and other purposes. If you can do this, and you think you have some time to spare, give it a go. |
THE REBORN Modification for DX1 Tuesday, July 27, 2004, 15:52 | Jonas Wæver | Comments We've just received an announcement from a new Deus Ex 1 mod called "THE REBORN". Since the e-mail was very well phrased, I will now go lazy on you and simply quote it here in its entirety: NEW DEUS EX MOD: "THE REBORN" The first project of the "two-man army" Ex Machina Games presents a thrilling, complex story in the spirit of the apocalyptic visions of George A. Romero. Greatly inspired by Romero's "Night Of The Living Dead", "Dawn Of The Dead" and "Day Of The Dead", THE REBORN sends the player on a heart-racing trip through a world which has turned into a living nightmare overnight. An inexplicable, lethal plague has spread like wildfire across the entire globe, making the major epidemics of the past appear like a harmless cold. About one third of the world population got infected in the blink of an eye, way too fast for medicine and science to find a cure or even an explanation for this phenomenon. But this only marks the beginning of an unbelievably greater terror, because the dead do not stay dead... THE REBORN features thrilling, complex gameplay in the spirit of the legendary first "Deus Ex", and the depth of the story with its surprising twists and turns, the carefully created characters and dialogue and the immersive level design prove that horror stories don't necessarily have to lack style and complexity. Everybody out there with a passion for "Deus Ex" style games and/or "thoughtful horror" in the spirit of George A. Romero should be looking forward to THE REBORN! In the likely case that this excellent introduction sparked your curiosity, you may investigate the project further by visiting the homepages of their team and the project itself. Failing that, you can e-mail any additional questions to Arne_Hupe @ex-machina-games.de. And to finish this whole thing off, a screenshot directly from their website to whet your appetite: |

In case you missed the first link to the site, here's another one. |
TNM Updated Once Again Sunday, July 25, 2004, 03:22 | Jonas Wæver | Comments The Nameless Mod's website has once again been updated. Trestkon's latest news post contains a lot of interesting information concerning the progress of the modification. The Picture of the Week has temporarily (for the duration of - you guessed it: One week) been replaced with a poll asking you how much humor you're expecting in the mod on a scale from 1 to 5. Go there and vote at once! |

TNM Weekly Update Saturday, July 10, 2004, 13:07 | Jonas Wæver | Comments A few weekly updates of The Nameless Mod's website have gone by mostly unnoticed. Since the last TNM update which was mentioned here, a bunch of new team members have joined the project, one old one has returned to finish up the work he started and another member has left the mod. Their POTW for this week is also the picture featured here on PDX at the moment: A screenshot of one of the main transit areas of the mod. |

Another TNM Update Sunday, June 20, 2004, 16:03 | Jonas Wæver | Comments The next weekly update of the The Nameless Mod has arrived, and with it, some new imagery. Another wallpaper featuring the character of King Kashue has been crafted by Ryan, and has also been used as this week's POTW. The skin of an old character who will no longer appear in the mod, Gundam, has been removed and replaced with the skin of a new character, Beeblequix, who is based on the mapper of the same name. Lastly, a new subsection with pictures of the subliminal messages in the trailer has been uploaded under the Trailer section. The TNM crew would also once again like to point out that the mod is REALLY in NEED of MAPPERS! If you can map at least decently and have the ability to dedicate yourself to a project and finish what you start, please direct an application including a little sample of your work at tnm@planetdeusex.com. Alternately, if you're familiar with item and object skinning for Deus Ex, you will also be able to help out. |
TNM Weekly Update Saturday, June 12, 2004, 06:12 | Jonas Wæver | Comments The weekly update of The Nameless Mod's website has arrived, bringing you updated pictures of 9 old skins which have been remade by Ryan and Hao, who are back to skin for the modification once again. TNM Extravaganza! Saturday, June 5, 2004, 15:54 | Jonas Wæver | Comments The Nameless Mod has just released a whole truck-load of content for all you loyal fans out there. The website of the mod has been completely redesigned and almost every part of it has been updated. At the same occasion, the development team, Off Topic Productions, has also launched a website related to the team in general rather than the specific project of TNM. However, the best part of all this is most definitely the trailer video, which has also been released today! The video is 4:05 minutes long, and can be downloaded in AVI and MP4 format, in low and high quality versions, from FilePlanet, EdgeFiles or a server kindly offered by Compudoc. A list of download mirrors can be found here. At the same occasion, OTP would like to point out that they're looking for a skinner, a graphics artist and a few good mappers. For a full list of updates, check out the marvellous new website! The team would also very much like to encourage you to drop in a comment on the website and/or the trailer at the public forums of TNM. |
And In Somewhat Related News... Monday, May 31, 2004, 03:32 | Jonas Wæver | Comments An attempt to get a comment from Harvey "Witchboy" Smith (former Lead Designer on Deus Ex and Project Director on Invisible War) on the current events at ISA only rendered the comment "I do know all about what's going on, but don't want to comment; I feel it would be unprofessional." However, a subsequent attempt to at least get something useable out of him produced the following rather interesting bit of information: "I am in the process of starting a new company. I am far from done... Deus Ex changed the world and I want to do that again." Sounds good, no? |
Eidos Denies Spector Departure Sunday, May 30, 2004, 16:26 | Trestkon | Comments According to a recent Gamespot news article Eidos has denied rumors that Ion Storm studio head Warren Spector has left or been laid off. The Eidos executive was tight lipped as to the alleged layoffs of a rumored 20 other members of the Ion Storm team, saying only, "With the completion of projects, there is always a review of teams." The plot thickens... Thanks to Walton Simons for the tip. |
Layoffs at ION Storm--including Spector? Friday, May 28, 2004, 09:33 | Despot | Comments Shacknews is reporting trouble at ION Storm: 20-25 people have apparently been laid off from ION Storm, including the studio head, Warren Spector! No details are available, but we'll keep you updated. |

If you think you have the skills, give me a ring at fender2k1@deusexgaming.com and attatch a screenshot or two of previously completed work. |

He says that the mod already has heaps of members, but he figures more members will get the job done more quickly. If you'd like to join the Aftermath mod, Darren can be contacted at this address or this address. |
ION Recruiting At Eł Friday, May 7, 2004, 03:08 | Jonas Wæver | Comments Thanks goes to Andrew Charlesworth for pointing out this post at Preys-World.com, which in turn was taken from Console Gold: Surprisingly developers Ion Storm have announced that they will be head hunting new talent at this months E3. They will be accepting applications for positions at the development house but via strict invitation only... Ion Storm, a studio known for making innovative games in a cookie-cutter world, is seeking the industry's best talent in every discipline including art, programming, level design, AI, and other related areas. "I believe there are people out there in our industry that are tired of making games with no soul," laments Steve Allen, artist at Ion Storm. "We believe the future is being defined here and now and we want to be one of the studios forging the way." Art Min, project director for an upcoming project adds, "To make innovative games, you need the absolute best talent. We are looking for people to help us reach the next level." |
Poll: Which of the DX games have you played? Tuesday, May 4, 2004, 23:53 | Despot | Comments New poll is now Up, as suggested by The Jonas (there can only be one): Which of the DX games have you played? Vote away! |
Enders Zone DX Mod Saturday, May 1, 2004, 15:25 | Jonas Wæver | Comments Nial Giacomelli has been planning a mod for Deus Ex for a few months, and figures it's about time to let people know about it. The mod is called Enders Zone and the development team calls themselves the Holeforbrain team. A somewhat brief description of the mod ensues: A dystopian world in which there is a physical military controlled class divide. The upper classes have risen, taking what they believe to be rightfully theirs, pushing the lower classes (slummers) into small areas of the city (Zones.) Slummer Zones run rampant with martial law and vigilantes. Murder, rape, and drug abuse is common. Gangwars rage. You play David Clevenger, a man hired to smuggle himself into a Slummer Zone and create a definitive documentary to be aired across television networks around the world. Slummer territory hasn’t been explored in years. There are no photos or cameras within the Zones and experts can only theorize its degenerative qualities. Giacomelli is looking for modellers, skinners, voice actors and mappers with experience. They must be able to work with deadlines and thorough documentation, and have both initiative and self-expression. Additionally, they must be able to interpret the tasks they're given with artistic flair and originality. If this sounds like a project for you, you may send Giacomelli a small portfolio of your work at: ng@runawaywords.com. They also have a website up and running, but so far it's just an outline of the mod. |
DX Visual Walkthrough Tuesday, April 27, 2004, 06:00 | Jonas Wæver | Comments Mike Mangold of Visual Walkthroughs has just completed his walkthrough of DX: Invisible War. His walkthrough of the original DX emphasized a pacifist play style, and he decided to stick with that for the sequel. In other words: If you follow this walkthrough perfectly, you'll complete the game without killing anybody. |
Deus Ex Graphic Enhancement Mod Monday, April 26, 2004, 17:30 | Trestkon | Comments Mods seems to be springing out of the grey goo recently! A team over at the Ion Storm Forums has begun collaborating on a project who's goal is to upgrade waning Deus Ex graphics. They plan to replace the character models with higher polygon versions as well as upgrade textures and plenty of other neat things that should be more than enough excuse for everyone to give DX yet another playthrough. If you'd like to offer your support or pitch in, check out their organizational thread by clicking here, here, or here. They also have a website which contains development screenshots, news and additional information. |
Burden of 80 Proof v1.0 Released Saturday, April 24, 2004, 05:35 | Jonas Wæver | Comments The single-player DX mod Burden of 80 Proof has been updated to version 1.0. The mod is available for both the Windows and the Mac versions of the game, and the update includes some bug fixes and a couple of gameplay enhancements. The most significant changes are as follows:

Fanfic: Behind Closed Doors Wednesday, April 21, 2004, 22:04 | Despot | Comments New fanfic is available for your viewing pleasure, by Phantasmak. Here's a bit of quotage: The grey and white shiny halls of the bombproof, EMP-hardened underground bunker which was the site of Sector G reflected its philosophy in a revealing manner. As Matt’s superiors put it, the agency had absolute freedom of action in order to ensure the safety of the free world. One had to be heartless in his line of work. This was a principal qualification or there was only one way to go: termination. "Withdrawal" was the more official term here. Matt Hall hadn’t been withdrawn. Yet, he thought. He was still useful to the agency which harboured him for the last few years, giving him a job he had to try hard to like and a good paycheck. |
GITM Mod Seeks Voice Actors Wednesday, April 21, 2004, 18:06 | Trestkon | Comments Vavrek has informed us that Ghost in the Machine is looking for voice actors for their upcomming trailer. They are looking for some pretty specific qualifications, so check out their site for further details. If you have any questions reguarding the voice acting, they would like them directed to their forums |
The Aftermath Mod Looking for More Help Sunday, April 18, 2004, 02:07 | Jonas Wæver | Comments We've received another mail from Darren Eastes, who started a mod a few posts down called The Aftermath. He reports that 18 people is already working on the mod, and that they're all very dedicated to producing a good quality modification. However, they still need an experienced 2D artist to make some skins for them, and a musician to make a couple of tracks. If you'd like to join the project, or if you're just interested to learn more, Darren can be contacted at dazza_upyourz@hotmail.com. |
GitM Update Thursday, April 15, 2004, 06:22 | Jonas Wæver | Comments The website of the DX modification Ghost in the Machine has been updated at long last. The update speaks of the conversion of the mod into a 'machinima' (game engine-driven cartoon if you will), which was decided a while ago and known to some people, but not actually announced on community websites. However, until the project leader Randomatic sorts out some technical trouble he's having, the project is on hold altogether. PR Director Vavrek reports that the support of the community is still needed, and that a GitM game is in fact still planned, but will probably be made for Morrowind, Unreal 2 or DX2 (if proper modding tools are made, that is), and it will not happen anytime soon. For more details, refer to the GitM website. |
Gearbox Hiring Monday, April 12, 2004, 22:31 | Trestkon | Comments Gearbox, who seem to be attempting to hire half the people in the industry lately, have announced that they are currently hiring for the following positions: 2D Artists, 3D Artist and Multiplayer Level Designers If you think you have the skills they need, head on over and check out their jobs page. |
Spector Interview On MeriStation.com Monday, April 12, 2004, 03:05 | Jonas Wæver | Comments vEk thought it worth to mention that the Spanish online gaming magazine MeriStation has posted an interview with Warren Spector. It's Spanish of course, so unless you understand the language (and I sure as heck don't), it probably won't be very interesting. |
2027 Site Has Been Re-opened Sunday, April 11, 2004, 02:59 | Jonas Wæver | Comments The website of the single-player DX1 mod 2027 has been re-opened. The site contains the latest news and info about the mod, downloads, and some screenshots of the mod. The team also sends word that they're looking for 3D animators and modellers to animate their weapons. If you want to help, visit this forum thread, or contact this address via e-mail or MSN. If you're Russian, you can also contact this address. |
DXIW Soundtrack Available For Download Saturday, April 10, 2004, 02:48 | Jonas Wæver | Comments Thanks goes to Colby Moore for pointing out that the soundtrack for Invisible War has been uploaded to the American site, and can be downloaded from the Downloads section of the site. |
Another New DX1 Mod Saturday, April 10, 2004, 02:30 | Jonas Wæver | Comments Darren Eastes has sent us the following mail regarding a new modification he's starting up. Since he hasn't mentioned it explicitly, and DX2 has no SDK (yet?), it would probably be reasonable to assume that the project is planned for DX1: I'm starting a new mod and I need to put a team together. "Why should I join this mod?" you ask? Because I have ambition, motivation, inspiration, skill and faith. It doesn't matter if you map, model, make music, whatever, I want YOU to help out. There's over 3000 Deus Ex fans out there and I need some of them. It's hard just to get one person! Please help out! If you'd like to join or you want to know more then contact me at: dazza_upyourz@hotmail.com. |
New DX Mod Friday, April 9, 2004, 06:14 | Jonas Wæver | Comments A new DX1 mod is being started up by Chris Needy a.k.a. Solidus, the creator of the long dead Penumbra mod, and the never actually started DX2 mod Trigun. This time, he's learned from his mistakes, and wants to make a mod with less ambitions. He had the following to say about the story of the mod: You are set into the somewhat distant future. The cities have been boarded up into large sectors in attempts to contain the brutal waves of crime that threaten to crush civilization all together. However many of these cities are falling rapidly while others are thriving from the so-called civil war that's being waged. Martial Law has been declared in several of the sectors at this point. You play as a member of an elite military/SWAT group that goes by the call sign War Eyes. For this project, Chris is looking for mappers, concept artists, and web designers. If you're interested, you're asked to contact him on one of these instant messenging clients: Yahoo Messenger: limiter_release@yahoo.com MSN: mega_x2001@hotmail.com |
witchboy leaves ION Monday, April 5, 2004, 22:27 | Despot | Comments Word from GameSpy HQ is that Harvey "witchboy" Smith is leaving the company to start his own development studio. GameSpy managed to get an interview with him about his plans and the reasons for departure. Here's a quote: GameSpy: Is this a voluntary departure or is there a deeper story here? Harvey Smith: I talked to Warren a lot prior to making up my mind to leave. He's always full of advice. He knows that I feel I have to try this. My departure was voluntary, openly discussed and amicable. I felt so much love, leaving. Everyone was super supportive and a little sad. It was humbling, hearing people say what I had meant to them. I honestly had no idea that so many people at the company felt that way. It's a major change for me; years ago, I was much angrier, and I tended to have half love, half hate relationships with the people around me. I really felt good, saying goodbye to all my Ion peeps. (We had pizza and three cakes, including one with a tombstone on it. I delivered a little speech, nearly crying in the process, and Warren said some nice words. It was awesome and far more emotionally charged than I had anticipated.) Before leaving, I talked to my mentors and collected advice. I had breakfast with Richard Garriot for a couple of hours, and seriously, his words were like pure gold. I feel like I'm a lucky person. Update: Another interview has surfaced on Gamespot. Thanks to Blue's News for the word. |
Eidos 2005: Deus Ex 'Action' game Monday, April 5, 2004, 09:46 | Despot | Comments Thanks to Da_Terminator and Gwog for pointing out a post on 1up that talks about a presentation on Eidos' website that gives a very interesting look at the company's upcoming software line-up. Here's the relevant snippet: The Deus Ex action spinoff is likely the game mentioned at Eidos' "City Day" presentation last October, Deus Ex: Clan Wars. Sources close to developer Crystal Dynamics report that this is one of its projects, a multiplayer shooter in the Deus Ex universe for PlayStation 2, and possibly other consoles. |
MP Secure Keypad Monday, April 5, 2004, 09:38 | Despot | Comments A new mini-mod for DXMP that should allow a keypad to work in multiplayer and have maximum security. This is still in semi-beta, so if you have problems, be sure to e-mail Flib, the author. Download link is here. |
MP Map pack Monday, April 5, 2004, 09:17 | Despot | Comments Thanks to Trestkon for the submission of a map pack containing two new MP maps for Deus Ex: DXMP_DeepBlue and DXMP_Dead-Eyes, both by ZeroPresence. A couple preview images: |
The Tools update Monday, April 5, 2004, 09:13 | Despot | Comments Two new tool links from the boys at DeusExGaming.com: -a texture pack for Invisible War with new skins for items such as the Cigarette Pack, MontyBites Candy, and Soda Cans. Created by Blumenkohl. -a model viewer from K^2, which "allows you to load up a .pro file and upload a new .bmp texture to it." There is an associated forum link as well. |
April Fools! Thursday, April 1, 2004, 18:15 | Trestkon | Comments The staff of PlanetDeusEx will be visiting E3 this year, and assisting at the Eidos booth where an exclusive Deus Ex 3 video will be previewed for the media. At this point we can't say too much more, but if you're attending, look for the guys with the PlanetDeusEx shirts! Or just the best looking guys in the area of the Eidos booth, either/or. |
Spector on Games Narrative Saturday, March 27, 2004, 11:26 | Jonas Wæver | Comments Da_Terminator pointed out a short article at IGN about a speech Warren Spector gave at the Game Developers Conference this year. His speech concerned the struggle of stories vs. freedom in computer games, apparently reaching the conclusion that it's important to strike a balance between the two. Give it a read, it's (unfortunately) not very long. |
New DXMP maps on DXEditing.com Friday, March 26, 2004, 11:02 | Despot | Comments DXEditing.com has new maps in their DXMP section--two are from ZeroPresence, and three from (V.ADM.) Kevo-sama. |

Titlefight: Deus Ex vs. Doom Monday, March 22, 2004, 13:46 | Despot | Comments The competition is getting tougher in the Titlefight--Deus Ex is now losing ground to Doom. This is a tough one, because both are true classics...may the best game win! |
New DX2 Review Thursday, March 18, 2004, 07:34 | Jonas Wæver | Comments Barry's Rigs 'n Reviews has posted a review of DX:IW, in which they give it a decent 7.5. Highs include the great storyline, the enhanced graphics and the freedom of choice. Lows include bugs and crashes, frequent level-loading, bad AI and odd physics. The review also contains a couple of links to IW-related files such as the 1.2 patch and the Hi-Res texture packages. |
Hardcore-DX Version 3.0 Tuesday, March 16, 2004, 08:54 | Jonas Wæver | Comments Hejhujka kindly informed us that the latest version of his Hardcore-DX mod has been released, and can be downloaded from here. he was even so nice as to do my job for me, by supplying a list of features:

EuroGamer Reviews IW Wednesday, March 10, 2004, 20:08 | Trestkon | Comments In case you were waiting on one more opinion before you went out and purchased Invisible War, EuroGamer.net has reviewed Invisible War. Quite a nice review pointing out the pros and cons, IW ends up receiving a score of 8/10. |
IW's standing in the UK Wednesday, March 10, 2004, 19:52 | Despot | Comments Thanks to M Kolmar for pointing out these stats, which show Invisible War in third-highest position, right after 007: Everything or Nothing and Sonic Heroes. This is quite good, considering it's a PC/XBox release in a PS2-dominated Britain. Interestingly, 62% of the sales were the Xbox version, and 38% for PC...not a good sign for the PC faithful. |
TNM Character Profiles Wednesday, March 10, 2004, 07:11 | Jonas Wæver | Comments I've just uploaded character profiles for four of the most important characters of The Nameless Mod. We realize our website doesn't give a very good idea of what our mod's about, and we hope you'll get a somewhat better idea of our story after reading these profiles. The storylines of the mod were changed quite a lot during an MSN team meeting yesterday, and although the basics remain the same, I think we all agree that the story has much more continuity now. In short: Our storylines now make sense! Remember to drop by our public forums and comment on the new character profiles. |
Top 10 Game Bargains Wednesday, March 10, 2004, 05:21 | Jonas Wæver | Comments That Guy called our attention to GameSpy's list of Top 10 Game Bargains, where the original Deus Ex is in the second place. The first place is taken by Final Fantasy Tactics for the Playstation. And yes, $10 cannot be said to be a high price for such a classic game. Although, chances are you already own it if you're reading this ;) |
Game-Radio IW Review And Cool Wallpapers Tuesday, March 9, 2004, 12:59 | Jonas Wæver | Comments The German website Game-Radio.net has posted a review of the European version of IW. As is the habit of these Germans, the Game-Radio people have written their review in German. And these guys, as far as I can tell, have no simple number representing their opinion of the game. However, the really interesting thing about this review is the three exclusive wallpapers (to the right of the review). On the two first pictures, Alex Denton actually looks like a superagent, and not, as many people have pointed out, some punk from the local skate park ;P |
Title Fight Round 2 Monday, March 8, 2004, 14:39 | Despot | Comments After soundly beating System Shock 2, Deus Ex is taking on Everquest, with Castlevania: Symphony of the Night in the "Extra Life" position. Deus Ex is leading the way by a large margin, but it can always use another vote! |
Invisible War in Europe Friday, March 5, 2004, 10:13 | Despot | Comments Thanks to M Kolmar for reminding us that today is the day Invisible War is released in Europe. Out with the champagne! As if to mark the event, BBC has a story about the game, which isn't exactly a review, but will certainly help get the word out. |
Couple Of New IW Reviews Thursday, March 4, 2004, 11:21 | Jonas Wæver | Comments A couple of new DX2 reviews have emerged. The first one is on FoxFire. It's not a very positive review, to say the least, but like most other people, he ends up giving it a pretty decent score - albeit not as high as some others. It gets 7.5. The other review is from the Swiss gaming magazine GBase, and is a review of the German version. The difference between the German and the English versions is probably not huge, though. Given that I'm not in school right now, I honestly can't be bothered trying to read it, but I did gather that the game gets 90/100. |
TNM Poll Sunday, February 29, 2004, 15:43 | Trestkon | Comments The Nameless Mod has updated their POTW with a public relations poll. They want to know what the community would like to see in the way of PR, so head on down and let them know what you think! |
Invisible War patch Friday, February 27, 2004, 17:20 | Despot | Comments The title says it all: the 1.2 patch has been officially released, and is now available for download from Eidos' site, and also from FilePlanet. It comes pre-installed with the European version of the game, so those of you on the other side of the pond need not worry about it. The patch contains all of the fixes from the 1.1 patch, and these as well:
Mirrors, courtesy of Blue's News: 3D Gamers, ActionTrip, Adrenaline Vault, DeusExZone, FileFront, and GameSpot DLX (registration required). |
Chapter 3 of Decker Parkes Thursday, February 26, 2004, 21:47 | Despot | Comments The third part of Decker Parkes' adventure is now online, chronicling the further adventures of this member of the NSF. Here's the opening lines to get you going: Three black limousines halted simultaneously outside, the curved side doors slid up over the roof as six men in camouflaged uniforms got out of each limousine armed with compacted assault rifles and submachine guns. It was the NSF leader, Juan Ivanovich Lebedev's, personal escort and close bodyguards. Behind the convoy of limousines a small square transit van pulled up from around the corner. It smoothly stopped beside one of the limousines four of the bodyguards from the limousine wearing long black mole skin coats went around the back of the van and opened the two heavy doors. Four men got out the back of the tan coloured van followed by two men wearing long dark brown leather coats and khaki coloured NSF uniforms with plated body armour vests. It was Juan Ivanovich Lebedev and his body double. |
Invisible War for Less Thursday, February 26, 2004, 11:24 | Despot | Comments In the Really Good Deals department, we have a GoGamer 48 hour madness sale, where you can snag Invisible War for $24.90. Hurry, though, there's only 13:34 left on the clock. |
GameOver reviews IW Thursday, February 26, 2004, 10:44 | Despot | Comments Thanks to Blue's for the link to a review of IW on GameOver. Less positive than most, it gives the game a score of 82%. Here's a quote: Ultimately, if I were to describe Invisible War in a few lines I would have to stress that the game's edges have been softened for the mass market. Many of the original's complexities have been watered down for easier consumption. Because it takes place so much further into the future, it also loses some of the familiarity. The United Nations no longer exists and in this game you lack a brother whom you can trust and depend on. There's no clear right or wrong, good or evil side in the game. That's supposed to be a feature. But it's a double-edged sword. At least with the United Nations, I knew where I stood. With the various pretender successors in this title, you never really get a solid attachment to anything or anyone. You don't care as much about the protagonist. And that is something that made the original game so great. Sadly, it's not as pronounced here. |
Title Fight: Deus Ex vs. System Shock Monday, February 23, 2004, 08:59 | Despot | Comments Gamespy is running a new titlefight feature, in which you as gamers get to casts votes in various NCAA-style matches. Coming up today at 12 PM PST is System Shock 2 vs. Deus Ex, so be sure to head on over and cast your vote. Not sure how I'll vote on this one...Deus Ex definitely had more depth, but System Shock was much more focused and atmospheric, not to mention the terrific ambience... |
GearBox Seeks Designers and 3D Artists Friday, February 20, 2004, 11:47 | Trestkon | Comments GearBox Software is currently seeking experienced level designers to work on an upcoming title. If you've created wonderful works of art with the Unreal engine, submit them! I quote, "We would definitely be interested in anyone who has built some great Deus Ex levels." Of course, this comes with the obligatory relocation to Dallas, Texas, but I know I wouldn't mind a change of environment! Check out their Employment Page for more information regarding the position! |
Decker Parkes returns Thursday, February 19, 2004, 21:48 | Despot | Comments The continuing story of Decker Parkes continues with Chapter 2...here's a snippet to get you interested: The city of New York was spiralling into deeper chaos; Walton Simons, Head of FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) had taken control over UNATCO and declared martial law, effectively blocking off all exits in and out of New York, public schools and services had been cancelled until things calmed down. The public taxis had completely stopped but civilians who were trying to make a few quick credits had converted their vehicles into civil-taxis taking their place, not exactly trust worthy but nothing was nowadays. Sounds like what New York normally is! Read more. |
The Tools Update Tuesday, February 10, 2004, 18:20 | Despot | Comments Now for all you manly men who weld on a weekly basis, rustle cattle, buy old cars because they're easier to repair, and refuse to leave their computer games un-modded, we have a few more Tools, courtesy of DeusExGaming.com, the ION Storm forums, and CadeF. Content Editor--a utility that allows the Masses to view and extract resources from (where else?) the IW resource files. Secondly, there's a vertex and pixel shader file disassembler, with an attendant forum link. The last is not directly related to Deus Ex, but does come in handy when work with image files. According to the Author, it "increases and decreases the size of an image while applying some filters." |
Another Spector interview Tuesday, February 10, 2004, 18:08 | Despot | Comments Another interview with Spector is up on Computer And Video Games, who seem to have a new 'view with him every month or so. Perhaps they can tell me who to bribe... Here's a quote about Deus Ex 3: When we spoke last November, you were telling us that preliminary work has already begun on the third Deus Ex game. Can we expect three to be as much a departure from two as two is from one? Spector: Absolutely. I mean, the day we start turning out sequels simply to make a quick buck is the day someone else is going to be making Deus Ex games. |
Reviews Tuesday, February 10, 2004, 17:51 | Despot | Comments A couple reviews of Invisible War have surfaced: The first is actually a review of Max Payne 2 as well, but it does have some good things to say about the game, as well as being on the NY Times site. Gaming news in well-known publications is good. The second is from DigitialBackSpin.com and is also quite positive: they recommend scheduling a fair bit of time to play the game because of its depth. The final score: 90/100 |
TNM Updates Saturday, February 7, 2004, 09:14 | Jonas Wæver | Comments A couple of updates of TNM's website have slipped by unnoticed. Most recently, the POTW of the site has been updated with yet another screenshot of the incredible DXI map. It never seizes to amaze me what you can do with a game as old as Deus Ex. Although work on the mod is going extremely well at the moment, the mapping department has started aching a bit. Trestkon has lost contact with a couple of the level designers, so now the mod is once again looking for mappers. More details on what the job involves can be found on the website. |
Invisible War to be patched again Monday, February 2, 2004, 21:23 | Despot | Comments And thanks again to DXGaming for pointing out this thread on the ION forums, in which Chris Carollo is quoted as saying another patch is on its way. No details or ETA have been announced, but we'll keep you posted. |
DeusExEd bits Monday, February 2, 2004, 21:28 | Despot | Comments Two new submissions on the venerable Deus Ex Ed: The first is a Hellfire Crossbow mod by SLAP, which is "inspired by the Hellfire Boltcaster from DX:IW." The second is a simple DXMP map by HelioWalton, which is spherical in nature (in case the name didn't give it away), and apparently a gravity-free map as well. |
Sound Drone 1.0 (beta) Monday, February 2, 2004, 21:21 | Despot | Comments Thanks again to DXGaming.com, we have word of another new utility, which allows Joe Q. Public to play and export sounds from Invisible War. An import feature is planned for a future version as well. Here is the link. |
Multitool v0.1 Monday, February 2, 2004, 21:16 | Despot | Comments Thanks to the fine fellows over at DeusExGaming.com for word of a tool-in-development that's been talked about on the ION Storm forums called "Multitool." Developed by Sourcerer, it apparently to dig into Invisible War's IDB files, and manipulate the data contained therein. This version only supports exporting, however, but that is most likely to change in the near future. The necessary files can be acquired from Sourcerer's website. |
PCGamer Awards Thursday, January 29, 2004, 05:44 | Jonas Wæver | Comments Ian Clements, reader of the PCGamer magazine, reports that they've given both their "Best Graphics" award and their "Worst Use of a Good Engine" award to Invisible War in their 2003 Game of the Year Awards. I guess you can interpret that last award whatever way you want to. I do think it's a shame such great physics and lighting won't be used for anything but the (somewhat short) singleplayer game itself. No multiplayer, no modifications. |
Gamesrader Review Tuesday, January 27, 2004, 15:44 | Despot | Comments Thanks once again to witchboy for linking to a review of Invisible War by none other than the inimitable Kieron Gillen of Cassandra Project renown--PC version only, however. A nice long review, a good portion of which is devoted to explaining how the demo doesn't demonstrate very well. In the end, it's a positive review, however, with a final score of 92%. |
Ashes to Ashes 4: Emergence Tuesday, January 27, 2004, 15:41 | Despot | Comments Due to popular demand (and threats, apparently) is Ion's Ashes to Ashes fanfic, Part 4--Emergence. Now with twice the conspiracies! |
Deus Ex Visual Walkthrough Monday, January 26, 2004, 12:53 | Winquman | Comments That's right ladies and gents, a new walkthrough for the original Deus Ex game. One with a lot of pictures, and a lot of information it seems. I wouldn't recommend it for modem users, but it looks really neat. See it here. |
Summoning Mod Saturday, January 24, 2004, 09:28 | Trestkon | Comments thatguy has created a small DX1 mod that takes all the hassle out of summoning toilets, weapons and everything else. This mod allows you to summon anything, ingame, using an efficient point and click menu. Give it a try! |

Gamecritics review (XBox) Thursday, January 22, 2004, 23:32 | Despot | Comments Props to the witchboy for linking us to this review on Gamecritics. It's somewhat limited in that the XBox version was the only one played, but over-all it's a positive review, with a final score of 9.0. It appears to be poorly researched, though--Spector is identified as the main creative force behind the game. |

Spector Speaks: C&VG.com interview Thursday, January 8, 2004, 22:26 | Despot | Comments Thanks again to Da_Terminator for linking us to an interview with Spector about the state of the industry. Here's a quote to get you interested: How difficult is it as a developer to remain unique (in terms of games) or come up with unique ideas for games? Spector: Ideas are easy. Seriously. The ability to convince someone to give you money to implement a unique idea... That's relatively rare. What's really hard, though, is actually going and implementing that idea. Developing and shipping a game - even a bad one - is hard. Shipping a good game is harder. Shipping a good, unique game, man, don't even ask! My professional background is pretty limited - some time as an academic, followed by board game work and then into electronic games - but I find it hard to imagine anything harder than making games! (Rewarding too, of course!). |

According to one of their subscribers, who supplied us with that information, the magazine has pretty high standards, so a 9 is not bad. |
